Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers do not have many games like this away from home.

Eric Piatkowski scored 25 points to lead a balanced attack as the Clippers had a surprisingly easy time in a 98-89 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Los Angeles, which entered the game with a dismal 9-57 road record over the last two seasons, including a 1-4 mark this season, never trailed and led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter.

Troy Hudson added a career-high 22 points and rookie Lamar Odom had 21 for Los Angeles, which concluded a 2-3 road trip and beat the Wizards for just the second time in nine meetings.

Juwan Howard tallied 19 points and Aaron Williams had 15 and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who have dropped eight of their first 10 games this season.

The Clippers won despite having just seven players available. Derek Anderson, Tyrone Nesby and Maurice Taylor all missed the game for Los Angeles.

They never appeared to need them against the Wizards, who started the game without point guard Rod Strickland. Coach Gar Heard benched Strickland for his attitude at practice on Friday. Earlier in the week, Heard benched six-time All-Star guard Mitch Richmond for not producing.

"We've got too many side distractions," Heard said. "Right now, our focus should be on winning basketball games. I won't determine starters for our next game until practice on Monday. I'm sure Rod will be there, and we'll look at it and go with our best guys. We just have to start thinking basketball."

"That's coach's decision," said Strickland, who had five points and five assists in 26 minutes. "If he's not naming the distractions, then I'm not naming them.

Hudson had 18 points and Piatkowski 17 as the Clippers took a 56-41 lead at halftime. They combined to hit 7-of-11 3-pointers in the first half. For the game, Los Angeles went 10-of-19 from beyond the arc.

"Early in the game, we were getting good penetration and I got some wide-open looks from the outside," Piatkowski said. "In the second half, I didn't get nearly as many open looks, so I guess it was important that I knocked down the ones that I did. It was nice that some other guys stepped up, too.

Washington outscored the Clippers, 27-18 in the third quarter to get back in the game. A jumper by Ike Austin with 1:50 to play in the fourth pulled the Wizards within 92-89.

But Hudson, who finished 8-of-15 from the floor, sank a 20-footer with 90 seconds left. Michael Olowokandi sealed the win with two free throws with 16 seconds to go.

Los Angeles shot 44 percent (32-of-72) while the Wizards finished at 40 percent (37-of-93).
