Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone reminded Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves that he is still the reigning two-time NBA Most Valuable Player.

Malone outplayed this year's early MVP candidate, scoring 34 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, to lead the Utah Jazz to their sixth straight home win over the Timberwolves, 108-93.

Malone, who was coming of a season-high 40-point performance on Saturday at Milwaukee, managed only 19 in the first meeting between these teams, an 89-84 Minnesota win on Friday.

Garnett had 29 points and 11 rebounds in that contest and entered tonight with whopping averages of 26.1 points and a league-leading 14.3 boards per contest.

But tonight belonged to Malone. The 6-9 power forward was hot from the start, scoring 23 first-half points to help the Jazz build a commanding 69-54 lead at the break.

"(Malone's) got it going," Utah guard Jeff Hornacek said. "When he gets in the post and takes his time with it and gets them off his jumper, he'll knock them down all day. He's just playing great."

Garnett collected 21 points and seven rebounds, failing to record a double-double for the first time this season. He did help the Timberwolves close within 94-90 with 7:39 to play, but Malone was up to the challenge, scoring eight points to fuel a game-ending 14-3 run. Malone sealed the win with an emphatic dunk that made it 104-93 with 1:29 to play.

"He's in full stride," Jazz guard Bryon Russell said. "There is no holding him back. The more consistency we get from him, the better."

John Stockton had 12 points and handed out a season-high 15 assists for Utah, which improved to 5-1 at home.

"Karl played very well tonight," Stockton said. "He was active on the defensive end as well, and that's huge. He looks pretty fresh out there. He takes good care of himself."

Terrell Brandon matched a season high with 21 points for Minnesota, which has dropped 12 of its last 13 on the road.

Malik Sealy scored 15 points and Radoslav Nesterovic added 11 for the Timberwolves, who shot 48 percent (35-of-73) and held a 32-30 advantage on the boards. Minnesota yielded 22 points off 17 turnovers while forcing only 12.

"You play a team like Utah and at the end of the game you have to execute," Sealy said. "They're a good team. They're a veteran ballclub. We're a good team, too."

Malone, who made 13-of-24 shots from the field, paced the Jazz to a season-high 58 percent (45-of-78) shooting performance.

Russell collected 15 points and Hornacek added 12 for Utah, which reached the 100-mark for the second straight game after failing to do so in its first nine games.

Joe Smith's driving layup got the Timberwolves within 94-90 with 7:39 to play but Malone soon took over.

Eisley made a 19-footer and Garnett hit a free throw before Malone had a layup, a 16-footer and a thunderous slam during an 8-2 burst that opened a 104-93 lead with 1:29 left.

Malone added a pair of free throws and Stockton a layup to cap the scoring.

"I said before the game, when you're playing, especially here, you have to play 48 minutes," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We can't have any lapses and we had a three-minute lapse at the end of the first half which they really took advantage of. And then you fall behind and them you exert so much energy to try and get yourself back into the game."
