Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider is backing up his words.

After spouting off last week about his desire to be the Atlanta Hawks' go-to guy, Rider scored 11 of his season-high 32 points in the pivotal third quarter of a 113-106 triumph over Miami Heat.

Rider, who made 13-of-24 shots, also had 13 points in the first quarter for Atlanta, which has won three of its last four following a 1-6 start.

"I thought I played hard and I thought I played good team ball," Rider said. "I was into the game, so I really liked my effort tonight both defensively and offensively. I'm basically just trying to buckle down and have a talk with myself to be professional."

Jimmy Jackson added 21 points, including 12 in the third quarter, when the Hawks were able to turn a two-point deficit into an 82-76 bulge. Jackson also surpassed the 8,000-point plateau.

"It's always fun when you win," he said. "In areas, we still have to get better. There were times we were up 10 and could not close them out."

"It's great," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "It builds confidence, it lets them know that they can stay on the floor with anybody."

Alonzo Mourning had 26 points and 11 rebounds while Jamal Mashburn scored 22 points for the Heat, who lost for only the second time in six road games.

"They are a talented ballclub," Mourning said. "Nothing surprises me in this league. You have got to be ready to play every night, any team can sting you. We have got to step up our intensity."

Miami had a 55-54 advantage at halftime and neither team led by more than three points. Tim Hardaway hit a 17-footer with 5:38 to go in the third quarter to give the Heat a 74-72 advantage. But Rider ignited a 10-2 run with a 15-footer 22 seconds later.

Jackson followed with a 10-footer that put Atlanta ahead for good. He added a 22-footer with 3:47 remaining before Mourning answered with a short hook shot. Alan Henderson made it 80-76 with 2:47 to go before Rider capped the burst with a driving layup 26 seconds later.

Weatherspoon got Miami within 86-84 at the end of the third quarter, and the Heat were within 92-90 with 8:37 to play before Rider hit two free throws and rookie Jason Terry buried an 18-footer. Terry pushed Atlanta's lead to 99-90 following a 3-pointer with 6:43 remaining.

Terry was 9-of-11 from the field in 27 minutes off the bench.

"The energy that I bring off the bench is my job," he said. "I help bring the spark. Tonight was a great victory for us."

"I'm trying to play my type of ball," Rider added. "It is 10 games into the season and I have been satisfied with one game. I am really trying to get into my style of ball."

Miami, which had won seven of its previous eight games, got no closer than five thereafter.

Dikembe Mutombo finished with seven points and 16 rebounds for Atlanta, which held a 46-33 edge on the boards. The Heat made 9-of-19 3-pointers.

"They can rebound the basketball," Mashburn said. "They have a pretty good team. We have got to beat them on the boards."
