Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Mitch Richmond could not have picked a better time to revert to his All-Star form.

Richmond scored 12 of his 19 points in the decisive fourth quarter and the Washington Wizards used tough defense down the stretch to post an 89-87 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

"I got in a little groove," said Richmond, who hit 6-of-13 shots from the field and 6-of-7 free throws. "They called some plays for me and I got to the line, that was the main thing.

"Down the stretch, I just wanted to take it to the hole and get to the line. Or if that didn't happen, just shoot the mid-range jumper. I guess the adrenaline just took over because we fought very hard on the defensive end to get back into this game."

The Grizzlies took an 83-78 lead with 4:38 remaining after Mike Bibby converted a layup. But that was their last basket until Othella Harrington also made a layup with a 1.1 seconds left.

Richmond hit a pair of free throws and followed with a jumper to bring the Wizards within one before Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws for Vancouver to make it 85-82 with 3:10 to go.

Richmond, a six-time All Star who was relegated to the bench for the last three games, made 1-of-2 free throws before Juwan Howard hit a layup to tie it with just under three minutes remaining.

"It's coming back," Richmond said of his shooting touch. "It's not there yet, but I think it's going to be here in a couple more games."

Ike Austin made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:01 to play, putting Washington ahead for good.

Bryant Reeves, who scored a season-high 25 points, missed a short jumper with nine seconds left for Vancouver. Austin grabbed the rebound and sank two free throws for a three-point cushion.

"I thought I had a good look at it," Reeves said of his shot. "But it turned out to be a tough shot. I tried to get the foul, too, so I could get to the line, but neither one happened. That was a tough loss for us. We played well enough to win tonight but just didn't execute down the stretch. They picked up their defensive intensity and we failed to execute."

Following a timeout, Abdur-Rahim missed a desperation 3-pointer that would have tied it. Harrington grabbed the rebound but did not have time to throw it back out, instead making a layup. Rod Strickland sealed the win with 1-of-2 from the line with under a second left.

"I really didn't get a good look on that 3," Abdur-Rahim said. "I was hoping to make (Reggie) Jordan foul me on that shot, but he played real tough defense on me."

Austin finished with 16 points and rookie Richard Hamilton had 14 for the Wizards, who won for only the third time in eight home games.

Abdur-Rahim scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Vancouver, which suffered its fourth straight loss and has dropped 26 in a row on the road.

"We had execution problems down the stretch," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We have to be able to make plays at the end of a close game."

Vancouver led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter, but Richmond's running jumper gave Washington a 75-74 lead with 7:35 remaining in the final period.

The Grizzlies roared to an 83-78 lead on Mike Bibby's driving layup with 4:08 left before the Wizards clamped down defensively and held Vancouver without a field goal until the final seconds.

Wizards coach Gar Heard substituted Jordan for Strickland for defense, and Jordan promptly drew an offensive foul on Othella Harrington, who finished with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Heard was heartened by his team's defensive intensity down the stretch.

"I thought that we finally played together," Heard said. "We had a good second half or a good fourth quarter. When you're 3-8, any win is a good win. This gave us a lot of confidence."

Strickland returned to the starting lineup with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds. Aaron Williams added nine boards and six points in 31 minutes off the bench but faltered down the stretch.
