Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones scored 14 points to lead six players in double figures as the Charlotte Hornets remained unbeaten against the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 89-73 victory.

Anthony Mason added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Bobby Phills and David Wesley also scored 12 points apiece as Charlotte won for the third time in four games and improved to 7-0 all-time against the Grizzlies.

"It was not pretty, but we'll take the win," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We've still got a long way to go. We need to put teams away. We've got to find how to do that."

Michael Dickerson had 16 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 15 and a team-record 21 rebounds for Vancouver, which could not overcome 23 turnovers. The Grizzlies have lost five straight overall and 27 in a row on the road, dating to February 16.

"Our shot selection and our not playing together was the difference in the game tonight," Abdur-Rahim said. "We did not execute very well. We have to be committed to playing together all of the time. Our offense needs to move the ball and take higher quality shots."

Dickerson sank two free throws to cut the Grizzlies' deficit to 54-47 with 4:50 left in the third quarter. But the Hornets went on an 11-4 run to grab their largest lead. Rookie Baron Davis had four points in the spurt, including a driving layup with 26 seconds left to extend Charlotte's lead to 65-51.

Vancouver shot only 22 percent (4-of-18) in the third quarter and fell behind 65-53 entering the final period.

The Grizzlies moved within 69-61 when Mike Bibby converted a three-point play with 9:04 to go in the fourth quarter. But Charlotte scored the next six points as Jones followed a 22-footer with a dunk and Brad Miller made two free throws as the Hornets extended their lead to 75-61 with 6:51 to play.

Vancouver got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

"We played good enough defense to win the game tonight," Grizzlies coach Brian Hill said. "Our problems were definitely on offense tonight. We couldn't hit any free throws and missed several layups. That's the third loss we've had where we held the opposition under 90 points."

Vancouver was 30-of-78 (38 percent) from the field, missing all eight 3-pointers. They also missed 10-of-23 free throws and committed 23 turnovers.

Abdur-Rahim scored eight points in the first quarter, when the Grizzlies made 51 percent (11-of-21) of their shots and took a 27-25 lead. But Vancouver committed eight turnovers in the second period and scored only 16 points as Charlotte moved out to a 46-41 lead at the intermission.

Charlotte shot 42 percent (30-of-71) from the field but made only 1-of-7 3-pointers.
