Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider buried the Miami Heat Tuesday in Atlanta. Tonight, he turned over the ball with 2.5 seconds to play and missed a potential winning shot at the buzzer as Miami held on for a 93-91 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Rider, who scored 11 of his season-high 32 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's 113-106 home triumph over the Heat, had the game in his hands again tonight. Dribbling toward the right sideline with five seconds to play, he unleashed a pass that flew out of bounds with 2.5 seconds remaining.

"I knew they were going to gear towards me. We had more than enough time to get the shot off," Rider said. "I had the right intentions, I just didn't throw a good pass."

After Miami's Voshon Lenard converted 1-of-2 free throws with 1.7 seconds left, Rider's potential winning 3-pointer clanged off the back of the rim, denying Atlanta its fourth victory in five games.

"It was a tough shot," Rider said. "If it goes in, we win. We were looking for a (3-pointer)."

Dan Majerle scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, including three 3-pointers. His free throws with 4:39 to play put Miami ahead for good, 80-79.

"We had a lot of confidence coming in the game," he said. "We knew we had to do a better job defensively. I think we did that. We forced them to take tough shots tonight."

Alonzo Mourning scored 25 points and Jamal Mashburn added 12 for Miami, which played without starting point guard Tim Hardaway, who was nursing a jammed right knee.

Pat Riley of the Heat became the third coach in NBA history to win 200 games with three different teams. Atlanta's Lenny Wilkens and Bill Fitch are the only others to accomplish the feat. Miami's 9-3 start matches the 1995-96 squad for the best in team history.

Rider finished with 28 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 20 and 18 rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost four of the last five meetings with the Heat.

"It was tough coming back here," Mutombo said. "We had to work our butt of in order to win. Today we just made too many errors."

Jimmy Jackson scored 12 points for Atlanta, which shot 45 percent (36-of-80) and held a 47-43 advantage on the boards. The Hawks yielded 20 points off turnovers.

"Turnovers killed us," Wilkens said. "We turned the ball over entirely too many times. Our guys were too anxious to make the pass, and they can't do that. We have to make eye contact with people."

Anthony Carter started at the point for Hardaway and had eight points and eight assists. Fellow rookie Rodney Buford scored 10 points off the bench for the Heat, who shot 41 percent (35-of-85).

"The rookies' job is to be ready to play," Riley said. "They need to stay in good physical condition. If someone goes down, I'm comfortable. Anthony Carter will learn more as the season progresses."

"I knew I was going to play a lot of minutes tonight," Carter added. "The game plan was to pass the ball and get comfortable. We were just trying to make some plays."

The game featured 18 lead changes and 11 ties, the last of which was snapped by Majerle's second free throw with 4:39 remaining. Majerle drained 3-pointers on consecutive trips to give Miami a 92-88 lead with 1:15 left.

"This was a hard-played game," Riley said. "We just found a way to win it. We struggled offensively without Tim Hardaway playing. This game came down to big plays down the stretch. (Majerle) made some big shots down the stretch."
