Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers have learned the definition of "loss" the hard way.

The Washington Wizards scored 12 of the game's last 13 points to defeat the struggling 76ers, 101-93, snapping a 14-game road losing streak and handing Philadelphia its fourth loss in five games.

The Sixers lost leading scorer Allen Iverson to a thumb injury earlier this week and learned today that center Stanley Roberts was expelled by the NBA after testing positive for an amphetamine-based designer drug.

"We're going through tough times right now," Philadelphia guard Aaron McKie said. "I was telling the guys, `It's like we're snakebit.' Hopefully somebody can take the hex off of us, get the guys back healthy, get some continuity in, then make a run down the stretch."

Tracy Murray scored 19 points off the bench and Ike Austin added 15 and nine rebounds as the Wizards (4-9) posted their first win away from home since March 27 at Denver.

McKie had 16 points and Larry Hughes and Theo Ratliff scored 15 apiece for the Sixers, who led by as many as 14 in the second quarter but were outscored, 57-37, in the second half.

McKie converted a three-point play as Philadelphia took a 92-89 lead with 2:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Rod Strickland made a driving layup and Murray sank a 21-footer to put Washington ahead, 93-92, with 1:15 to play.

Austin made two free throws 14 seconds later. Strickland was fouled by George Lynch after a missed 3-pointer by McKie and sank both free throws with 48 seconds to go as the Wizards opened a 97-92 lead.

Snow was fouled with 38 seconds left and made the first free throw. Lynch grabbed the rebound off the missed second attempt but misfired on two short jumpers. Snow got the rebound but threw a bad pass that was stolen by Richmond and led to Murray's dunk with 21 seconds to play as Washington took a 99-93 lead.

Two free throws by Richmond with 17 seconds left provided the final margin.

"We intensified our defense in the fourth," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "In the first half Philadelphia shot 54 percent, and most of those were easy shots. I told them at halftime you had to take away those easy shots, especially the inside shots and second and third shots inside. We had to make them take jump shots and we stepped up our defense."

Philadelphia shot just 25 percent (6 of-24) in the final period.

Washington closed the third quarter with a 13-2 run. Chris Whitney and Murray drained consecutive 3-pointers to start the spurt and Richmond's driving layup with seven-tenths of a second left cut Philadelphia's lead to 73-72 entering the fourth quarter.

"The game was the third quarter," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "We had a 12-point lead and we self-destructed. We didn't handle the rest of the game very well. They got a couple of tough breaks. We got tight at the end."

The Sixers used a 10-0 run late in the second quarter to build a 14-point cushion. McKie had four points in the burst and rookie Todd MacCulloch's layup put Philadelphia ahead, 54-40, with 1:08 to go before intermission.

The 76ers shot a blistering 80 percent (12-of-15) in the second quarter and led at halftime, 56-44.

After shooting 32 percent (15-of-46) over the first 24 minutes, the Wizards made 51 percent (18-of-35) of their shots thereafter, including 10-of-16 in the final period.

Philadelphia shot 29 percent in the second half and finished with 24 turnovers.
