Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Known for their defensive prowess, the San Antonio Spurs put on an offensive clinic.

Tim Duncan scored 31 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the hot-shooting Spurs coasted to a 121-98 rout of the overmatched Boston Celtics.

San Antonio, which came into the contest leading the league in team defense, used its offense to take control. The Spurs shot a blistering 62 percent (26-of-42) in the first half and opened a commanding 66-42 advantage.

San Antonio shot 58 percent (47-of-81) for the game and set a season high for points in a game. They scored 118 in a win at Golden State on November 9.

Duncan connected on 12-of-17 shots and has 57 points and 32 rebounds in his last two games.

Mario Elie added a season-high 25 points for the Spurs, who posted their season-best third straight win while defeating Boston for the 10th time in the last 11 meetings.

"Games like these are great challenges. Coming in, this was a game we were concerned about because of their energy level and just the way they play," Elie said. "But when you press as much as they do, you're going to have open spots on the court. We just seemed to find them tonight."

Eric Williams collected 16 points and Antoine Walker 15 for Boston, which lost for only the second time in eight home contests.

"We deserved to get our (butt) kicked tonight," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "The way they shot and the way we played defense, it pretty much adds up to a (butt-kicking). We didn't rotate well defensively and they knocked down their shots all night."

The result was never in doubt. With the game tied, 6-6, the Spurs used a 17-6 spurt, capped by Jaren Jackson's 3-pointer, to open a double-digit lead with just over three minutes left in the opening quarter. They led 33-20 after the first 12 minutes.

San Antonio also shot well from 3-point range, connecting on 8-of-16 shots from beyond the arc.

"This was clearly the best all-around game we've played all year," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I can't think of shooting the ball much better than we did. That's what happens when you have a group of unselfish players who always seem to find the open man."

The Spurs maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. Their biggest scare came with 71 seconds left before halftime when Duncan came down with an elbow near teammate David Robinson's neck.

Robinson left with a stinger in his neck but returned in the second half and finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

"It was a little bit of a scare when I felt my whole right arm go numb for a little while," he said. "But the feeling came back and I knew I'd be ok."

San Antonio held its biggest lead at 96-65 after three quarters. Duncan had 28 points and 14 rebounds at that point.

Tony Battie added 13 points for the Celtics, who shot 45 percent (40-of-89) and were outrebounded, 43-36.
