Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Looking to get back on track, the Indiana Pacers faced the right team.

Rik Smits scored 17 points and Jalen Rose added 15 to lead seven players in double figures as the Pacers cruised to a 105-86 romp over the Vancouver Grizzlies, who lost their 28th straight road game. The Pacers held the Grizzlies to 41 percent (32-for-78) shooting.

"I thought our defense won it for us tonight," Smits said. "When we play good defense we give ourselves a chance to win. We help each other by rotating and helping going to the ball."

Dale Davis and Travis Best each scored 14 points for Indiana, which had lost four of its last five games. Reggie Miller and Austin Croshere each contributed 11 points as the Pacers shot 53 percent (42-of-79) from the field and improved to 8-0 all-time against the Grizzlies.

"We had to expect more from ourselves on both sides of the ball," Croshere said. "We must continue to give effort on both ends of the court. We did that tonight and it resulted in a win. We have talent, athleticism and are becoming to know each other more and more in the this early season. We know there is more parity in the league and we must meet the challenge every night."

Indiana shot 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from 3-point range and outscored Vancouver in the paint, 42-28.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 22 points and Othella Harrington added 16 for Vancouver, which has lost six straight overall and has not won on the road since a double-overtime win vs. the Los Angeles Clippers on February 16 of last season.

"We had a poor entire first half and I thought that there was no focus from our game plan during the shootaround," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "Our defense and intensity was as poor as I've seen it in a while. Overall, it was a lackadaisical effort."

Rose had five points in a 9-0 spurt that he capped with a nine-footer to give the Pacers a 37-28 lead with 8:31 left in the second quarter. Vancouver trimmed the deficit to 39-35 on a pair of free throws by Abdur-Rahim with 4:25 remaining. But Best capped an 11-4 surge with a driving layup, pushing the margin to 50-39 with 55 seconds left in the half.

Bryant Reeves, who scored 11 points, made a layup to draw the Grizzlies within 67-61 with 3:03 left in the third quarter. But Vancouver came no closer as Smits made two free throws, Davis followed with a layup and Miller converted a three-point play to push the lead to 74-61 with 1:43 remaining.

The Pacers maintained a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and built it to as much as 101-80 when Chris Mullin hit a 3-pointer with 2:32 left.

Mullin scored a season-high 10 points in 18 minutes.
