Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- To overcome a 21-point deficit in the third quarter, you need a nearly perfect fourth quarter. The Milwaukee Bucks did just that in a 114-112 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Sam Cassell had 28 points and 12 assists and Glenn Robinson scored 21 points for Milwaukee, which made 14-of-18 shots and outscored Boston, 35-20, in the final period.

"This is a huge win for us," Robinson said. "Being down to a team like Boston that does so much running, trapping and playing with energy makes it that much tougher to come back. But we kept working and working."

The Bucks opened the fourth period with a 20-7 run, tying the game at 99 when Danny Manning stole the ball from Kenny Anderson and converted a three-point play at the other end with 5:38 to play.

"I'm not the one you should be asking about what turned the game around, you should be asking our players," said Milwaukee coach George Karl. "It was just one of those games I thought we had the momentum a couple of times and they'd come down and hit a key shot."

Ray Allen, who scored 18 points, made a 17-footer to give the Bucks the lead for good, 111-110, with 44 seconds remaining. After Boston's Antoine Walker missed a jumper, Tim Thomas made two free throws for a 113-110 lead with 11 seconds left.

Anderson drove for a layup to pull the Celtics within 113-112 with 3.7 seconds left. Allen immediately was fouled after taking the inbounds pass and made only 1-of-2 free throws, givng Boston a chance. But Dana Barros' heave from beyond half-court hit the front of the rim and backboard as time expired.

Walker had 27 points and nine rebounds and Paul Pierce and Vitaly Potapenko each scored 21 points for Boston, which has lost five straight meetings with Milwaukee.

The 21-point lead was the biggest blown by the Celtics since the New York Knicks overcame a 25-point deficit and defeated them on Christmas 1985.

"I've been on both sides of games like this," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "You can't walk out the clock when you have a big scoring half like we did in the first half; you have to continue to score. This is a bitter pill."

After Manning's three-point play, rookie Adrian Griffin made two free throws to give Boston the lead. But Cassell answered with a jumper from the right corner to make it 101-101 with 5:01 remaining.

Potapenko, who had 11 rebounds and made 9-of-11 shots, sank a 13-footer to make it 108-103 with 3:18 left. But Robinson responded with a 20-footer 14 seconds later and after Anderson and Pierce each missed layups, Cassell made a jumper from the left corner to cut the deficit to 108-107 with 2:26 to go.

"I think they were up something like five points with three minutes to go and that was big because our guys didn't panic," Karl said. "That was probably the key point when we made our run right there."

"We decided to lock in on Pierce and Antoine and force the others to beat us. Potapenko got alone a couple of times but we shut the rest of the team down," Allen said.

Each team traded misses before Allen dunked with 1:22 left, giving the Bucks their first lead since the opening quarter. Anderson and Walker missed layups before Griffin's eight-footer gave the Celtics their final lead at 110-109 with 62 seconds left.

Boston started as hot as Milwaukee finished, making 18-of-27 shots for a 42-24 lead after the opening quarter. Pierce scored 17 points in the first, hitting 6-of-9 shots in eight minutes.

The Celtics cooled down the second, hitting 8-of-20 shots, but did not let the lead fall below 11 points.
