Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Against the hapless Chicago Bulls, the San Antonio Spurs need only one of their "Twin Towers."

Tim Duncan scored 23 points and matched a career high with eight blocked shots as the San Antonio Spurs -- primarily without David Robinson -- cruised to a 101-78 romp over the Chicago Bulls.

Duncan made 9-of-14 shots and grabbed 10 rebounds as San Antonio won four straight games for the first time this season. Robinson scored 10 points before leaving with neck spasms with 4:16 to play in the second quarter. Robinson initially injured his neck when Duncan's elbow landed on it in Wednesday's 121-98 rout of the Boston Celtics.

"He basically hit the same spot as the other night," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Robinson. "Hopefeully he's fine. I don't expect any problems. It may just be sore or stiff for a while."

"There was a little left over irritation from the other night wehen I hurt it," Robinson said. "It was sore. It was irritating me and I couldn't turn my head one way. I can't play like that."

After Chicago cut a 16-point deficit to two, Duncan made a 15-footer to trigger an 8-0 spurt and give San Antonio a 60-56 advantage with 3:19 left in the third quarter. The Spurs took a 71-60 lead into the fourth quarter and kept the margin in double digits for the final 10:34.

"Tim comes to compete, that's his job," Popovich said. "He doesn't compete or not compete (depending on the situation). He doesn't care who's on the court."

Malik Rose had 13 points and four blocked shots for the Spurs, who tied a team record with 20 blocks. San Antonio also had 20 blocked shots against Golden State on February 24, 1981.

Avery Johnson had 10 points and five assists for San Antonio, which has won the last two meetings with Chicago after losing six straight to superstar Michael Jordan. Samaki Walker recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots off the bench and substitute Terry Porter also scored 10 points.

Top overall pick Elton Brand scored 24 points and Hersey Hawkins added 15 for the Bulls, who shot just 35 percent (28-of-79) from the field and lost their sixth straight game.

"Tonight the Spurs played terrific," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "They played like a team with confidence like you would expect a championship team would. You can tell they are a tight-knit group."

Kornel David had 13 points and eight rebounds for Chicago. He made three free throws to cap a 14-2 run and pull the Bulls within 55-52 with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Duncan stopped the run with a pair of free throws, but rookie Michael Ruffin dunked to make it 57-54.

After Rose made one free throw with 4:13 left in the third quarter, David hit a short jumper to cut San Antonio's lead to 58-56.
