Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Brent Barry burned his former team with five of his 14 points in the final 45 seconds as the Seattle SuperSonics held on for a 98-93 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Barry made two free throws with 45 seconds remaining to give Seattle a 94-91 lead and a 3-pointer to make it 97-91 with 11 seconds remaining. It was the Sonics' first basket since Rashard Lewis' dunk with 4:50 remaining.

Barry spent his first two-plus seasons with the Clippers before being traded to Miami in February 1998. After playing for the Chicago Bulls last season, he was dealt to Seattle in August.

"We hope we don't continue to do this," said Barry, who was disappointed the Sonics waited until the final minute to put away the game. "We're playing down a level against other teams we should be playing better basketball against. We better make sure we get some blowouts here soon."

Seattle has won 24 of its last 25 meetings with Los Angeles, including 10 straight. The SuperSonics opened the season with a 104-92 victory over the Clippers at the Staples Center.

Seattle coach Paul Westphal was satisfied with the effort, considering the Sonics were playing for the first time since Sunday.

"I'm happy," Westphal said. "With four days off and with a lot of guys banged up, I really didn't know what to expect. I thought we were a little sloppy with the ball and our timing wasn't really good in the first half."

The Sonics prevailed despite committing 19 turnovers. Derek Anderson scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half as the Clippers opened a 51-47 halftime lead.

"In the second half, we really did a nice job defensively, just doing what we had to do," Westphal said. "We still didn't take good care of the ball but we started making a few more shots."

Los Angeles had a chance until the final minute despite shooting just 3-of-17 the field in the fourth quarter.

"(We had) poor decisions as far as offense," Clippers coach Chris Ford. "Defensively, I thought we played fantastic. We made some great stops at that end of the floor."

Vin Baker scored 24 points and Gary Payton added 20 for the Sonics, who improved to 5-0 at home this season.

"It's a big win for us," Baker said. "The Clippers have been playing well. We got to hold home court as our advantage."

The Clippers took their last lead at 81-80 on a layup by Michael Olowokandi with 10:24 to play. Anderson was held to just nine points in the second half.

"He got a few shots early on some of our rotations," Barry said. "He got off early and had a little bit of his confidence going. We made sure that we took care of business down the stretch."

Clippers forward Tyrone Nesby, who scored 18 points, drilled a 3-pointer to tie it at 84-84 with 8:24 remaining but the Sonics scored five straight points. Baker made two baskets and Lewis converted 1-of-2 from the line to give Seattle an 89-84 edge with 5:58 remaining.

"We'll take all the wins we can get," Barry said. "We'd like to get to a point where we can find our niche, get into a groove and start playing good basketball."

The Clippers pulled within 92-91 on Troy Hudson's layup with 1:54 to go but did not score again until Anderson hit a pair from the line with five seconds remaining.

Just before Barry's 3-pointer, rookie Lamar Odom missed an ill-advised 28-footer from just to the left of the top of the key.

"I'm a confident player," said Odom, who had 13 points. "When I pop out and I feel it and I've got a good shot, I'm gonna take it, no matter what the situation."

However, Ford questioned the shot selection.

"We didn't execute very well," he said. "We have 45.2 seconds to go and we get the ball in Lamar's hands. Unfortunately, he took a jump shot."

The loss denied Los Angeles its first three-game winning streak since December 27, 1997-January 3, 1998.
