Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers have shown modest improvement this season but still are no match for the deep and talented Portland Trail Blazers.

Damon Stoudamire scored 13 of his 24 points in the first quarter and Steve Smith added 13 points as the Trail Blazers never trailed in an 88-71 victory over the Clippers.

"(Stoudamire) doesn't have to do that much, but he's gonna be great on any team he plays for," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said.

Portland has won nine of its last 10 games and improved to a remarkable 8-2 on the road this season. The Blazers are the only team in the league to win 13 games, but trail the first-place Sacramento Kings by percentage points in the Pacific Division.

"Portland has size and defended us very well," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "Their lineup, as far as I can in all my years, is the best since the 1986 Celtics. Look at their depth. They're solid."

"We're still trying to come together," Portland center Rasheed Wallace added. "All the pieces are there but it's just a matter of fine tuning those pieces. Once we start playing on full cylinders we'll be all right."

Portland recorded its seventh straight road victory over the Clippers and improved to 12-1 in the last 13 meetings between the teams.

"It's good to get a game like this where ultimately you can rest your guys in the fouth quarter," Dunleavy said. "It was a good win. The guys played hard."

With the Blazers leading 41-34 late in the second quarter, Wallace scored six points in a 15-2 run that gave Portland a 54-36 halftime lead.

Wallace finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Scottie Pippen just missed a triple-double with 10 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.

"We haven't accomplished anything yet," Pippen said. "We're playing well and having fun and enjoying it. We can't get too satisfied."

Portland opened its biggest lead at 77-50 on Wallace's jumper with 10:10 remaining before the Clippers were able to cut into the deficit against the Blazers' reserves.

"We had the killer instinct tonight a lot better than we have played lately," Pippen said. "I think we've been in some games where we've sort of played to the level of our competition and allowed them to stay in the game with us and it was tough for us to win. But tonight we stuck to the game plan."

Tyrone Nesby scored 16 points and rookie Lamar Odom added 15 for the Clippers, who forged their last tie at 12-12 midway through the opening period.

Pippen and Stoudamire hit 3-pointers in an 8-0 spurt that gave the Blazers a 20-12 lead with 3:33 remaining in the opening period.

"Our perimeter people are not doing what they're supposed to be doing," Ford said. "They've got to start doing their job and that's knocking down shots."

Trailing 27-19 after the first period, the Clippers pulled within three on three occasions in the second period, the last at 35-32 Nesby's two foul shots with 6:46 remaining.

Portland put away the contest in the third period, opening a 73-49 cushion on Brian Grant's foul shot with 19 seconds left.

Portland shot just 43 percent (37-of-87) but held Los Angeles to only 33 percent (26-of-79) and converted 16 turnovers into 20 points. Los Angeles was under 30 percent until late in the fourth quarter.

"I thought defensively we did a good job," Dunleavy said. "We made them work hard and kept their field-goal percentage down."

The 71 points allowed represented a season best for the Blazers, who crushed the Clippers, 121-98, in Portland on November 3.
