Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton and Key Arena proved too much for the Indiana Pacers.

Payton had a season-high 31 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as the Seattle SuperSonics remained perfect at home with a 102-91 victory over the struggling Pacers.

The 6-4 point guard was 10-of-19 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line in 41 minutes for the Sonics, who improved to 6-0 at Key Arena. Seattle has won seven of its last eight games to move percentage points behind first-place Sacramento (9-1) in the Pacific Division.

"This was just one of those fortunate games," Payton said. "A good team like that is going to be down like that. So we're real happy that they didn't come in here real hot."

Payton, who entered the contest averaging 21.3 points and 10.1 assists, scored 20 points in the first half to help the Sonics open a 54-42 lead that they did not relinquish.

Horace Grant had a season-best 23 points to go with 11 rebounds for Seattle, which opened an 85-65 lead after three quarters and managed to hold off Indiana coach Larry Bird's reserves in the final period.

"We figured Horace would be open a lot," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "Their big guys are a little bit slow. Like (Rik) Smits has a tough time covering the pick-and-roll. So if Horace could pop back a few (feet), we figured he'd be open."

"It felt good, because some nights it doesn't go that good," Grant added. "Fortunately for us, tonight they fell."

Reggie Miller, the Pacers leading scorer, managed just six points on 1-of-9 shooting in 24 minutes and rode the bench for the entire fourth quarter. A perennial contender for the Eastern Conference crown, Indiana has lost five of seven to slip back to .500 at 7-7.

"The (starters) are not making the plays," Bird said. "That's the problem. The Sonics' penetration, drive and kickouts just tore us up all night. They had open looks. We missed some shots, but like I told the team, `If you don't hustle, you're coming out.' We're not putting up with any of that. If our veterans don't come out and give us a better effort than that, they'll be on the bench watching the young guys develop.

"(Miller) had some good shots tonight," he added. "He is a little confused about the way the ball is coming out of his hands. I don't really worry about Reggie that much because he will hit his shots."

The Sonics have won three in a row in the series and the last three meetings here. These teams did not play in last season's lockout-shortened campaign.

Dale Davis was one of the few Indiana starters to give a solid effort, collecting 19 points and 15 rebounds.

The Pacers reserves gave a spirited effort over the final 12 minutes as Austin Croshere's 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to 88-75 with 7:26 to play.

Jalen Rose's layup with 3:27 left made it 94-85, but Payton hit two free throws and a jumper to extinguish any hopes of a Pacers' comeback.

Ruben Patterson collected 18 points and Vin Baker added 11 and eight rebounds for Seattle, which shot 44 percent (38-of-87) and overcame 18 turnovers.

Chris Mullin scored 12 points off the bench and Croshere and Smits added 10 apiece for the Pacers, who shot 35 percent (32-of-91) and held a 49-48 rebounding edge.

Payton snapped an 8-8 tie with a layup, sparking a 17-3 run as the Sonics opened a 25-11 lead with 4:22 left in the first quarter.

Seattle has won seven straight home games dating to a 91-84 to the Los Angeles Lakers on May 2.
