Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp scored 25 points, including four crucial free throws in the final 33 seconds, as the Cleveland Cavaliers held on for a 106-99 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

After Dallas got off to a slow start for the second straight night, Hubert Davis, who scored 16 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, drained a 3-pointer to cut Cleveland's lead to 86-84 with 7:35 to go.

But the Cavaliers went on an 11-2 run over the next 3:24 as Wesley Person scored seven points, including a driving layup with 4:11 to play to extend Cleveland's lead to 97-86.

Brevin Knight hit a running jumper to give Cleveland a 99-87 advantage with 3:03 to play, but Dallas went on a 12-2 run. Davis drained consecutive 3-pointers as Dallas pulled within 101-99 with 47 seconds remaining.

Kemp sank two foul shots with 33 seconds to play and after a missed jumper by Davis, Kemp was fouled and was perfect on both free throws with 22 seconds to play.

"We're a young team and we have to learn to keep the pressure on the opponent," Kemp said. "If we have a chance to take a team out, we have to do it. The first unit did pretty good, the second unit struggled tonight."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points and Michael Finley added 14 and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, who posted their eighth straight loss on the road.

The Cavaliers stormed out to a 31-11 lead over the first 8:58 as Kemp scored all 11 of his first-quarter points in that run. Cleveland shot a blistering 78 percent (15-of-19) to take a 38-19 lead after one quarter.

"To start the game, our guys were really ready to play and it showed in the first quarter," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "Defensively, we got it going pretty good. We got after them defensively and got a lot of easy baskets. It's always scary, a little bit, when you jump out to a big lead early in the game like that."

The cold-shooting Mavericks made only 32 percent (8-of-25) of their shots in the first 12 minutes, one night after hitting only 16 percent in the second quarter of their loss to the New York Knicks.

"It looked like a terrible night coming in the first quarter," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "It's nice to win games, but it's nice to be competitive enough to be able to win. I'll take this one over New York last night every time. We competed and found a way to get back into the game."

Cleveland took its largest lead early in the second quarter as Mark Bryant's hook gave the Cavaliers a 40-19 cushion with 11:43 to go. But Dallas went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:28 as Davis sank two of his six 3-pointers in that span. The Mavericks never got closer than nine points the rest of the period as Cleveland took a 57-43 lead at intermission.

Nowitzki drained his second 3-pointer of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 63-60 with 7:04 remaining, but Cleveland went on a 13-0 run as Sura scored five points and Andrew DeClercq made consecutive layups.

Knight's two free throws extended Cleveland's lead to 76-60 with 3:23 to play. Dallas went on a 7-0 run to move within 78-69 with 39 seconds left and entered the final quarter trailing by that same margin.

DeClercq had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Sura scored 15 points, making three of Cleveland's 3-pointers. The Cavaliers shot 44 percent (38-of-86) from the field and held advantages of 55-40 on the boards and 33-2 in fast-break points.

Dallas rebounded from its terrible first-quarter shooting to make 40 percent (36-of-88), including 8-of-22 from beyond the arc.
