Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The one certainty when the New York Knicks face the Milwaukee Bucks is it will be a close game.

Allan Houston scored 25 points and the Knicks used a suffocating defensive effort to shut down the cold-shooting Bucks and post an 84-80 victory.

All three games between the teams last season were decided by six points or less and the lone meeting this season went into overtime before the Knicks recorded a 111-101 victory.

It was no different tonight as the Knicks used a 13-1 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 68-58 lead with 10:58 remaining. Houston had seven points and Marcus Camby six in the decisive burst.

Latrell Sprewell netted 23 points and Camby had 13 and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who have won three of their last four games to move back above the .500 mark at 9-8.

Ray Allen collected 25 points for Milwaukee, which shot just 25 percent (10-of-39) in the second half and 33 percent (23-of-70) overall.

"They are a very good offensive team," Sprewell said. "Our bread and butter is defense. We aren't a team that's going to outscore everybody. We think of ourselves as a defensive team."

"Everyone played really well," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy added. "The story of the game was defense. Anytime we hold an explosive offensive team, it's a good defensive game."

Milwaukee was without second-leading scorer Glenn Robinson, who missed the game with a bruised right calf.

The Bucks took their last lead at 58-57 with 1:56 left in the third quarter after Danny Manning sank 1-of-2 free throws. Houston drilled a 3-pointer and consecutive baskets by Camby gave the Knicks a six-point advantage entering the final period.

The Bucks, who entered the contest as the second-highest scoring team in the league at 104.1 points per game, made only 4-of-21 shots in the third quarter and struggled for the second straight game. They were coming off a season-low 79-point performance on Saturday against Philadelphia.

"I am more disappointed in the third quarter than I am in the fourth quarter," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We can't win basketball games shooting 32 percent."

Houston, who connected on 10-of-21 shots from the floor, had four straight points to start the fourth quarter to give New York a double-digit advantage with under 11 minutes to play.

The Bucks pulled within 77-73 with 2:59 to go after Ervin Johnson made two free throws, but that was as close as they got.

New York shot just 40 percent (34-of-85) but held a 43-41 rebounding edge.

Tim Thomas -- Robinson's replacement -- scored 12 of his 15 points In a tight first half, helping the Bucks to a 42-38 advantage.
