Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 30 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 18, including a crucial 3-pointer with 53 seconds left, as the Dallas Mavericks handed the reeling Chicago Bulls their eighth straight loss, 101-95.

The Bulls fell behind by 25 points in the third quarter but cut the deficit to 92-87 on a dunk by rookie Elton Brand with 2:37 left in the fourth quarter. But Damon Jones, who signed with the Mavericks hours before the game, made a driving layup with 2:21 to go.

Brand's layup with 1:56 remaining again moved the Bulls within five. But Finley, who was born and raised in Illinois, sank two free throws 32 seconds later. After former Maverick Chris Anstey missed a follow shot, Nowitzki nailed a 24-footer from the right corner to seal the win.

"Any road win is a great game for us," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We played a superb ballgame for a long time tonight. Our ball movement was good and crisp, and I didn't call many plays because they moved the ball that well."

Dallas snapped a two-game losing streak and recorded its second win over Chicago in less than a week. It was Dallas' second win in 11 road games.

Rookie Ron Artest scored 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, Brand added 14 points and Anstey had 11 and 15 rebounds for Chicago, which owns the league's worst record at 1-13.

"This was the first time that we had two or three days of work and showed no improvement," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We did nothing to disrupt their shooters and they did not have to put the ball on the floor to beat us. They had their way."

Dallas entered the third quarter with a 55-37 lead and extended its advantage to 76-51 on a layup by Nowitzki with 2:53 remaining. Chicago scored the next six points on two free throws by Brand, a tip-in by Anstey and a dunk by Corey Benjamin to move within 76-57 with 1:20 left.

The Mavericks shot 61 percent (11-of-18) in the third quarter while outscoring Chicago in the paint, 22-6, to open an 80-61 cushion.

Finley scored 10 points and Dallas made 65 percent of its shots to take a 32-21 lead after one quarter.

The Mavericks extended to a 20-point lead in the second as rookie Rick Hughes made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:22 to play. Chicago shot only 30 percent (6-of-20) of its field goals and trailed, 55-37, at halftime.
