Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns looked like the team without their starting point guard.

In the absence of injured rookie playmaker Steve Francis, Bryce Drew outplayed Jason Kidd to lead the Houston Rockets to a 105-95 victory, snapping the Suns' season-high seven-game winning streak.

Drew, a second-year player out of Valparaiso, scored 15 points to help the Rockets to a 109-96 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday in the first game Francis missed due to an injured ankle. Tonight, the 6-3 point guard played his best all-around game of the season.

"There's nothing like experience," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "You can get some by watching but you have got to be out there and play. I loved (Drew's) performance tonight. I think all of his cylinders are clicking."

Drew hit three of the Rockets' 11 3-pointers, grabbed six rebounds and kept Kidd off balance all night, playing 42 solid minutes. Afterward, he was asked for his response had someone told him he would outplay Kidd.

"I'd say you're probably insane," Drew said. "My assists come from guys hitting big shots. I get the assist but they've got to hit the shots. Our team did a great job tonight. Every game I'm just trying to get a little bit better. I'm still making some mistakes out there, but I'm learning from them."

Kidd, the consummate point guard and 1999 All-NBA First Team selection, lit up Francis and the Rockets for 17 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists in an NBA season-high 53 minutes during a 128-122 double-overtime triumph on Wednesday.

But Kidd managed 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting and five assists in 37 minutes against Drew as the Suns looked directionless in yielding a whopping 33 points off 20 turnovers.

"Turnovers. Every game we have lost is because of turnovers," Kidd said. "In those games we toss the ball around like a hot potato. We just didn't take care of the basketball tonight."

Shandon Anderson scored 26 points and Charles Barkley added 21 for Houston, which has won consecutive games for the first time since November 12-13. The Rockets improved to just 2-6 at the Compaq Center.

"I feel good about what we're doing," Tomjanovich added. "We're building on things. But we have to stay positive and not get complacent."

"We've been trying to run more the last few games and that opens up the offense," added Anderson, who has 53 points in the last two games. "With (Hakeem Olajuwon) and Francis out, some other guys had to step up and make some shots and the shots have been there for me."

Rookie Kenny Thomas scored a season-high 15 points, including five during a decisive second-quarter run that gave Houston a 41-31 lead with 6:27 remaining.

Penny Hardaway and Cliff Robinson each scored 21 points for the Suns, who had not lost since a 91-82 setback to the Los Angeles Lakers on November 15.

"We were flat the whole game," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "I didn't recognize that team out there, especially in the second half. The 32 points we gave them off our turnovers was ridiculous."

Rex Chapman scored 14 points off the bench for Phoenix, which shot just 3-of-13 from 3-point range, while allowing Houston to shoot 11-of-24 from long range.

"They shot the ball real well," Ainge said. "Anderson shot the (3-pointer) well and so did Kenny Thomas. They're a tough team to beat when they're making the (3-pointers)."

"Houston made a lot of shots and our transition defense wasn't very good," Chapman added. "That's a bad combination."

Anderson sank 11-of-16 shots, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Cuttino Mobley scored 12 points off the bench for Houston, which shot 48 percent (41-of-85).

Hardaway made a layup to pull Phoenix within 28-27 with 9:56 remaining in the first half, but Mobley and Thomas combined for 10 points during a 13-4 spurt that gave the Suns the lead for good, 41-31, with 6:27 left.
