Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rasheed Wallace buried a turnaround jumper with 1.3 seconds to go and Scottie Pippen capped a big game with a block at the buzzer as the Portland Trail Blazers posted a 92-90 triumph over the Phoenix Suns.

Wallace compensated for a missed free throw with 25 seconds left by sinking a jumper over Oliver Miller from the left baseline. The Suns called timeout and set up a shot for Tom Gugliotta near the left elbow. But as Gugliotta went up for the potential tying hoop, Pippen got enough of the ball to knock it away.

"Rasheed has been doing a great job for us late in games," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We had the look. We felt that was a good matchup for us. He's very good at being aggressive with his move and he delivered."

"We had been working that matchup the whole game," Pippen added. "We wanted to get the last shot and I thought Rasheed did a great job."

Wallace scored 21 points and Pippen collected 13, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Trail Blazers, who have won 11 of their last 15 meetings with the Suns and swept Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Gugliotta and Cliff Robinson scored 19 points each for the Suns, who had their six-game home winning streak snapped. Phoenix has dropped two straight after winning seven in a row.

"That was a good game, I thought we played well," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "I thought our defense was good."

The Suns led by 13 after one quarter and 49-33 with three minutes left in the first half. The Trail Blazers closed the half with a 9-2 burst to draw within 51-42 at the break.

Portland opened the third quarter with 10 straight points to take its first lead of the game. Pippen had six in the run, including a layup that capped the spurt at 52-51 with 9:46 left in the quarter.

"We were attacking the bucket a little more," Portland point guard Damon Stoudamire said. "We were hitting some shots in that second half. In the first half, we weren't giving ourselves a chance because we had a lot of turnovers. Even when they were pulling away from us, we were able to stay with reach."

"We kind of had them on their heels for most of the first half," Gugliotta said. "We came out a little lackadaisical in the second half but we knew they were going to make a run. They are one of the best teams in the league and we just couldn't get it done in the last three or four minutes."

The game remained tight throughout most of the second half and Portland opened an 85-82 edge following a 13-footer by Pippen with 2:30 to go. Rodney Rogers knotted the contest 52 seconds later with a 3-pointer and the teams traded empty possessions.

Wallace missed a layup with 57 seconds remaining but Brian Grant tipped it in for an 87-85 advantage. Fifteen seconds later, a three-point play by Gugliotta gave Phoenix the lead.

Portland called timeout and Miller quickly fouled Wallace, who made both from the line with 36 seconds left. Wallace blocked Rogers' layup attempt with 28 seconds to go and was fouled. He made 1-of-2 for a 90-88 lead.

Jason Kidd, who had 10 points and 10 assists, found Gugliotta for a layup that knotted the contest, 90-90, and set up the finish.

"It was a hard-fought game," Robinson added. "Both teams really played hard to try and get the win. They had a few more plays down the stretch."
