Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Rookie point guard Anthony Carter scored a season-high 20 points as the Eastern Conference-leading Miami Heat remained hot without injured starter Tim Hardaway, cruising to a 99-91 victory over the sliding Los Angeles Clippers.

Carter, a 6-1, 190-pounder out of Hawaii, hit 9-of-13 shots, handed out five assists and turned over the ball just twice to lead the Heat to their fifth win in six games without Hardaway, who is sidelined with a jammed right knee.

"We can't tolerate whether (Carter's) a rookie or not, you know?" Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Grow up, fast. He's got a great opportunity to play. He's got some mental toughness and he just sort of stayed with it and we got a good game out of him tonight."

"Tonight was a great game for me," Carter added. "I'm just going to try and keep it up. Now I need to concentrate on Portland (on Tuesday) and get ready for them."

Alonzo Mourning had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Jamal Mashburn scored 20 points for Miami, which matched the best 17-game start in team history at 13-4 with its sixth consecutive win over the Clippers.

The Heat have a four-game lead over second-place New York in the Atlantic Division and are two games better than the Central Division-leading Toronto Raptors in the East.

Derek Anderson recorded his first career triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for Los Angeles, which has lost a season-high six straight games. The triple-double was the Clippers' first since Mark Jackson accomplished the feat on March 13, 1994.

Informed of his achievement, Anderson said, "I guess it's all right. It's my first, but it's not in a win. So it really doesn't mean anything right now."

P.J. Brown scored 10 points for the Heat, who shot 51 percent (42-of-82) and forced 16 turnovers. Mourning was 10-of-18 from the floor, 5-of-7 at the line and dominated inside with eight blocked shots.

Rookie Lamar Odom scored 20 points and Maurice Taylor added 17 for Los Angeles, which shot 43 percent (39-of-91) and held a 47-41 advantage on the boards.

"A person like me, I'm used to winning," Odom said. "But this is the NBA. Losing hurts, but playing competitive basketball is fun. The Miami Heat and Pat Riley basketball ... defense comes first, offense last."

Brian Skinner scored nine of his 15 points in the first half to keep the Clippers within 46-44 at intermission. Odom's layup on the first possession of the second half forged a 46-46 tie, but Brown responded with a thunderous slam to put Miami back in front.

Mourning blocked Taylor's layup attempt on the ensuing trip, but Anderson picked up the loose ball and buried an 11-footer to knot the contest at 48-48.

Carter fueled the game's decisive run with a driving layup, two free throws and a 15-footer that opened a 54-48 lead with 8:29 remaining in the third quarter. Brown's 17-footer capped the 8-0 burst, but Odom hit a 27-footer and Michael Olowokandi slammed to pull Los Angeles within 56-53 with 6:17 left in the period.

"In the second half our defense was ready to play," Carter said. "We were hitting our shots and moving the ball pretty good. We were trying to be more physical. Every night is scary in this league. Everybody has responsibility in the NBA."

Mourning provided the answer with a seven-foot hook and Brown sank a 16-footer before Mourning's free throw re-established an eight-point lead for Miami with 4:28 remaining.
