Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider got his share of shots and made enough for a season-high 38 points as the Atlanta Hawks won their fifth straight game, 99-81, over the sinking Los Angeles Clippers.

Earlier this season, Rider complained about not being Atlanta's No. 1 option and was suspended one game for missing a practice. But he made 18-of-29 shots and fell four points short of a career high, adding nine rebounds and seven assists. He made 1-of-2 free throws.

"He was incredible and he's going to do more," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said of Rider. "He was patient tonight. He took over when he had to. He got other guys involved. He got nine rebounds, that's All-Star quality."

The outspoken Rider scored seven points in a 19-7 fourth-quarter run that he capped with a fadeway jumper to push the lead to 90-75 with 3:09 remaining.

"I noticed that, too. I was like `Only two free throws,' I was trying to get fouled," he said. "We were dragging our feet in the mud, for a long time we weren't lively. A few guys came to me and said, `We need a big night out of you.' I think guys are working well with each other."

The Hawks improved to 7-2 at home and reached .500 (9-9) for the first time this season.

"It took a little time. Are we .500 now, I haven't looked in a while," Rider said. "That's good to know. We started off real slow. It looked real grim. It's good to turn it around."

Dikembe Mutombo recorded his 14th double-double of the season for the Hawks with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Chris Crawford had 10 points and six boards, helping Atlanta extend its winning streak against the Clippers to 10 games.

Maurice Taylor had 22 points and seven rebounds and Michael Olowokandi added 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for Los Angeles, which shot 37 percent (32-of-87) and suffered its seventh straight loss. Rookie Lamar Odom, the top overall draft pick, scored 16 points but made just 6-of-18 shots.

"We didn't play good at all, plain and simple," Odom said. "Isaiah played a heckuva game. He basically won a game for them singlehandedly, plain and simple."

Taylor scored 12 points and Odom 11 in the first half as Los Angeles took a 47-45 edge into the locker room. The teams traded the lead eight time in the third quarter before Rider hit an 18-footer to put Atlanta ahead for good, 59-58, with 5:15 remaining.

"We hung tough," said Los Angeles coach Chris Ford. "It was 63-60, something like that, and then all of sudden we caved in again. We played hard and Isaiah had the hot hand."

Crawford had a dunk to cap a 12-2 burst and extend Atlanta's lead to 69-60 with 1:38 left in the third.

The Hawks were ahead 71-63 after Mutombo made two free throws with 29 seconds left in the quarter. The Clippers had the first two baskets of the final period, cutting the deficit to 71-67 on Tyrone Nesby's 10-footer with 10:14 left. But Rider answered with a jumper from the left sideline to begin the 19-7 run.
