Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- A halftime speech by Charles Barkley seemed to ignite the Houston Rockets, who erased a 17-point halftime deficit but could not overcome the Boston Celtics in a 100-96 loss.

Kenny Anderson scored 20 points and Paul Pierce added 19 for Boston, which had a 52-27 lead with 5:44 left in the second quarter and a 62-45 advantage at halftime. Antoine Walker had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who this season have blown leads of 14 and 21 points in losses to Atlanta and Milwaukee, respectively.

"Give a lot of credit to the Rockets and the job that Rudy (Tomjanovich) did coaching them back into that game," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We took a couple of quick shots and they rebounded the ball."

"We passed the ball tonight," Walker said. "I just thought a couple of times we were isolated on one side of the court and didn't get a lot of movement, but every win is important, no matter how ugly."

Barkley was honored at halftime, receiving two long ovations, a piece of parquet floor from Boston Garden and a framed photograph of him battling former Celtics great Larry Bird for a rebound.

Barkley, who suffered a season and career-ending ruptured quadriceps tendon in Wednesday's 83-73 loss at Philadelphia, thanked the crowd just before the players returned to the court. He postponed his surgery to make a final trip to Boston.

Houston scored nine straight points to tie the score, 89-89, on Thomas Hamilton's layup with 4:42 to play. After a key rebound by Adrian Griffin, Pierce hit a 3-pointer to give Boston a 92-89 lead with 3:56 remaining. Griffin had nine points and 10 rebounds and hit 4-of-4 free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the win.

"I'll give my guys credit for making the run and not quitting, they played real hard in the second half," Tomjanovich said. "But I'm tired of moral victories."

Cuttino Mobley scored 23 points off the bench and Carlos Rogers had 15 and 13 rebounds for Houston, which has lost its last two games following a three-game winning streak.

Mobley made a 17-footer to pull the Rockets within 94-93 with 1:14 remaining and Houston had a chance to take the lead after Griffin missed a jumper. Bryce Drew grabbed the rebound and threw a long outlet pass to Mobley, who missed two layups before Pierce got the ball. Anderson made two free throws with 20 seconds left to give Boston a 96-93 lead.

Anderson scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Celtics to a 32-16 lead. Houston had 14 turnovers, leading to 20 points for Boston in the opening period.

"You can't commit 14 turnovers in the first quarter and expect to give yourself a chance to win," Tomjanovich said. "That's too big a hill."

Boston's biggest lead came when Pierce drove for a layup to cap a 6-0 burst.

Houston used a 7-0 burst to cut the deficit to 75-65 with 2:45 left in the third quarter on a dunk by Rogers.
