Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason collected 21 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Charlotte Hornets to their fourth straight victory, 106-99 over the Denver Nuggets.

Mason, who played three games for the Nuggets early in his career, made 8-of-12 shots for a season high in points and also had five steals as Charlotte defeated Denver for the eighth straight time. The 6-8 Mason has four career triple-doubles, all in the 1996-97 season.

"I told the guys that we had to have a collective effort. Everybody has to step it up," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "I can't say enough about `Mase,' he stepped it up and controlled the game. He was close to a triple-double and played lots of minutes (44). I liked that he was making quick moves and kicking it out when he didn't have the shot. When they weren't coming on to him, he took it to the hoop strong."

Brad Miller scored a season-high 17 points and grabbed eight boards for Charlotte, which shot 49 percent (39-of-80) and never trailed. David Wesley scored 14 points and handed out eight assists for the Hornets.

"We had an effort from everybody tonight," Wesley said. "We were able to get a big lead and hold them off at the end. Mase was huge early in the game. Then they doubled him and I was able to get good looks and knock down some critical 3s when Denver got close. It's great that everybody got minutes. We had a lot of different lineups and a lot of them worked."

Nick Van Exel and Raef LaFrentz each scored 20 points for Denver, which fell to 2-2 on its five-game road trip. Routed 115-90 at Boston on Wednesday, the Nuggets closed to one point twice in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many 20 in the first quarter.

"We are just trying to find a magic component to win on the road," LaFrentz said. "We just have to keep working hard. It's frustrating. I'm not used to losing games, but we have a .500 (9-10) team right now. We are young and have a lot of talent. It was just a poor start. We are trying to play catch-up. We didn't run out of gas. It was just too much to come back from."

Antonio McDyess recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds for Denver, which shot just 7-of-28 from 3-point range. Van Exel made 4-of-8 3-pointers, including a trio in a 16-5 third-quarter run that pulled Denver within 71-70 with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter.

But Todd Fuller responded with a layup 23 seconds later and after a basket by McDyess, hit two free throws to give the Hornets a 75-72 lead with 2:44 left.

A dunk by McDyess pulled Denver within 84-83 with 9:11 to go. But the Nuggets came no closer as Eddie Jones made a 19-footer to trigger a 9-0 run that was capped by rookie Baron Davis' two free throws with 6:02 remaining. Jones and Davis each had 13 points.

Mason scored 13 points in the first quarter when Charlotte raced to a 33-16 lead. Mason's three-point play gave the Hornets a 26-6 advantage with 3:21 to go. Denver shot just 35 percent (8-of-23) in the period.

"We dug ourselves a too big a hole with that 20-point deficit early in the game," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "We tried to plow our way back, but came up a little short. We had some good opportunities, but made too many mistakes at crucial times with several turnovers."

The Nuggets went on a 15-4 run and closed to 41-38 on LaFrentz's three-point play with 5:09 left in the second period. Rookie Eddie Robinson answered with a 15-footer on a pass from Mason to ignite a 13-2 run by Charlotte, which held a 60-46 lead at halftime.

Robinson had 10 points and five rebounds in his first start.

Van Exel scored 16 points in the third quarter, when Denver outscored Charlotte, 31-20. He had 11 points in the 16-5 tear.
