Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Michael Finley posted his second triple-double of the season as the Dallas Mavericks snapped a three-game losing streak by holding off the undermanned Phoenix Suns, 120-115.

A former Sun, Finley played all 48 minutes and made the most of them. The 6-7 swingman hit 12-of-26 shots and 6-of-7 free throws for 33 points, grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds and handed out 10 assists. He scored 20 first-half points to lead Dallas to a 57-44 lead at intermission that it did not surrender thereafter.

"Fortunately for me, my shots were falling down," Finley said. "I had good opportunities to rebound and when I got the guys the ball, they were knocking down shots. It was whatever it took for my team to win. The coaching staff expects all three of those categories to be high on the stat sheet each and every night for me. And I like that reponsibility."

The triple-double was the fifth in the NBA this season and the third of Finley's five-year career. He had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in a 106-99 loss at Cleveland on November 30.

Robert Pack had 24 points and 11 assists for Dallas, which improved to 5-3 at Reunion Arena.

"It was good to get the homestand started with a win," Pack said. "I think we stayed committed to pushing the ball and taking easy shots and knocking them down. (Finley) played well. He had some big rebounds."

Phoenix point guard Jason Kidd, the NBA leader in triple-doubles last season, nearly posted his first triple-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. He sank a 3-pointer with 13 seconds to play that pulled the Suns within 117-113 after it trailed by 20 points entering the final period.

But Pack and Finley made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Dallas.

The Suns were without starting center Luc Longley (back spasms) and guard Penny Hardaway, who missed his third straight game with plantar fasciaitis.

"We were trying, but we were a step slow for whatever reason," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "They looked fresh, they looked like a team that had a few days off. They were ready to fly up and down the court and we were a step late getting back."

Cliff Robinson helped pick up the slack with 28 points and Rodney Rogers and Todd Day combined for 31 off the bench for Phoenix, which shot 44 percent (41-of-93) and held a 48-45 rebounding advantage.

"(The Mavericks) are definitely capable of winning basketball games with the way they pushed the ball up the floor tonight," Robinson said. "I think we had a better second half, but each time we got close, we took a bad shot or threw the ball away. Finley played a tremendous game for them."

Cedric Ceballos scored 22 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 19 and Hubert Davis 17 for Dallas, which shot 53 percent (46-of-87) to overcome 26 points off turnovers.

"When you know you're playing against players that play that well, you can put yourself into a position to dig in a little tougher," Ceballos said. "We were home, we wanted to get a good feeling in our hearts about winning basketball games."

"Cedric and Pack and Finley, everybody really opened it up for everyone else," Davis added. "Everybody was really unselfish, they gave us some great passes and we were able to knock them down."

Finley hit a 3-pointer and a 10-footer on consecutive trips to give Dallas a 38-26 cushion with 7:01 remaining in the second quarter. His 24-footer just under three minutes later made it 48-31.

"Michael hurt us bad," Ainge said. "I think his eyes light up when he plays against Phoenix sometimes. I think we gave him too many baskets in transition. The basket got big and he was knocking down things from everywhere."

The Suns outscored the Mavs, 42-27, in the fourth quarter, but had dug themselves too deep an early hole.
