Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Dikembe Mutombo's performance towered over Kevin Garnett's.

In maybe the best individual game of the season, Mutombo scored 27 points, grabbed an NBA season-high 29 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead the Atlanta Hawks to a 105-94 victory over the slumping Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 7-2 Mutombo upstaged the 7-foot Garnett, who collected his first triple-double of the season with 22 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. Garnett also had seven steals for Minnesota, which has lost six straight games.

"He was awesome," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "Dikembe has been playing great basketball for us. He had a few games where he was flat but he really came back with a vengeance."

"He played a super-duper game," Garnett said. "I don't think a quadruple-double would have saved the night tonight."

Mutombo took advantage of the absence of Minnesota frontcourt players Dean Garrett (sore knee) and Joe Smith (respiratory infection). He primarily was matched up against inexperienced Radoslav Nesterovic.

Mutombo's rebound total was the second-best of his eight-year career. He had 31 rebounds against Charlotte in March 1996. The center also was perfect from the floor, hitting all 11 of his shots as the Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak.

"I was a little bit frustrated with the way I played over the weekend, especially Saturday in Cleveland," said Mutombo, who was only 2-of-6 from the field in his last two games. "I think it was a great accomplishment, but I can't celebrate too much because I have two big games coming up."

With the game tied 55-55 with 8:46 remaining in the third quarter, the Hawks went on a 19-8 run to open a 74-63 lead with 2:55 left. Alan Henderson scored nine of his 17 points during the run, which was capped by Mutombo's three-point play.

The Timberwolves got no closer than six points thereafter.

Jimmy Jackson scored 23 points and Isaiah Rider added 16 -- all in the second half -- for the Hawks, who hit 47 percent (41-of-87) from the floor.

"A total team effort," Jackson said. "The guys played really well. Dikembe started it off for us and J.R. (Rider) finished it off for us."

Terrell Brandon scored 16 points and Anthony Peeler added 15 for the Wolves, who shot 42 percent (40-of-96) and were outrebounded 60-39.

"As I told our guys, I thought we played hard; I don't think we played smart all the time," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We kept on leaving our rotations and the basket wasn't covered. Because of that, we had no answers for Mutombo. He single-handedly pretty much beat us up in the paint."
