Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Scott Skiles was a winner in his coaching debut as Rex Chapman scored a season-high 22 points and the Phoenix Suns used a big fourth quarter to defeat the Detroit Pistons, 114-104.

Skiles, 35, took over the coaching reigns Monday after the stunning retirement of former coach Danny Ainge. The former guard, now the youngest coach in the NBA, had been an assistant under Ainge since the 1997-98 season.

"Well, only 1,160 more wins to catch Lenny Wilkens," Skiles said. "That's a big win. Any win for us right now is a big win."

With the game tied 80-80 after three quarters, the Suns used a 10-0 burst to take a 90-80 lead with 7:36 remaining. Toby Bailey opened the run with six of his career-high 12 points and Oliver Miller capped the run with four of his season-high 17.

The Pistons closed to within 105-101 with 2:03 left, on a basket and free throw by Jerry Stackhouse. But the Suns scored the next nine points, highlighted by consecutive jumpers by Jason Kidd and a 3-pointer by Chapman, to take a 114-101 lead.

"We got contributions from guys that maybe normally don't contribute," Skiles added. "Toby Bailey did a great job and Oliver was huge. It was very, very nice to see Rex calm down a little bit and make shots like he's capable of doing."

Detroit played the fourth quarter without Grant Hill, who left late in the third quarter with ankle and hip soreness.

"I thought we fought," Piston coach Alvin Gentry said. "Obviously not having Grant the last quarter really hurt us. We're not going to put him out there feeling the way he's feeling.

Chapman added eight points in the quarter for Phoenix, which is 11-2 at America West Arena this season.

"It's been real emotional the last few days, good and bad," Chapman said. "I really hate to see Danny leave, but on the other hand Scott's a great friend. I know what a hard worker he is and I wanted to just come out and give the effort for him."

Kidd nearly recorded a triple-double, with 18 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. The Suns are 11-2 this season when Kidd reaches double figures in assists.

Stackhouse scored 35 points and Christian Laettner added 26 -- both season highs -- for Detroit, which shot 44 percent (36-of-81) from the floor and 89 percent (25-of-28) from the foul line.

Stackhouse had a tough game from the floor, making only 9-of-24 shots. He did most of his damage at the foul line, connecting on 14-of-16 free throws. Laettner was 10-of-14 from the field and all five of his free throws.

"I think we had poor execution," Stackhouse said. "We came out and made mental mistakes. We've got to stop making mental mistakes. It's costing us games."

"Sometimes we're unorganized out there, we've got to get on the same page," Laettner said. "There were too many times we came down and weren't in anything specific. That makes you have bad offensive sets and then you compound it by making mistakes down on the other end."

The Suns were without star guard Penny Hardaway, who missed his fourth straight contest with plantar fasciaitis, and starting center Luc Longley, who sat out his second game with back spasms.
