Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Glenn Robinson scored 11 of his 25 points in a 40-point first quarter as the Milwaukee Bucks held on to a big lead for a change and cruised to a 116-99 victory over the Orlando Magic.

Ray Allen scored 29 points to lead the Bucks, who had blown big leads in five of their last eight games but turned back every challenge tonight. One of the better shooting teams in the NBA, Milwaukee shot 50.5 percent (47-of-93) from the field.

The Bucks scored 14 of the game's first 16 points and pulled away for a 40-17 lead after one quarter. Robinson got some help from Sam Cassell and Scott Williams, who added eight points each in the period.

"We had it going from the very beginning," Robinson said. "We came out and made shots. We were very active on the boards and helping each other out."

Tariq Abdul-Wahad and Chucky Atkins scored 15 points apiece for the Magic, who trailed by as many as 26 points and lost for the third time in four games. Orlando shot just 39 percent (32-of-82).

"I think, for a change, Milwaukee came out with an edge," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "They had to prove something."

After Orlando's Darrell Armstrong opened the game with a layup, Milwaukee scored the next 14 points, including four apiece from Robinson, Cassell and Williams. Cassell's jumper made it 14-2 just three minutes into the contest.

"We shared the basketball," Williams said. "We got a couple of easy run-outs. My teammates found me for a couple of dunks that got me into the game."

A layup by Monty Williams had the Magic within 25-15 with four minutes to go, but six different Bucks scored in a 15-2 spurt that closed the quarter and gave Milwaukee a 23-point bulge. In the period, the Bucks shot 68 percent (19-of-28) from the field and held the Magic to 25 percent (6-of-24).

Coming off a 101-99 home loss to Denver on Saturday in which it blew a 16-point third-quarter lead, Milwaukee maintained its double-digit advantage against Orlando. The Bucks led 68-52 at halftime and 97-79 after three quarters as Allen scored 24 points in the middle two periods.

"When we get leads like that it kind of scares me," Robinson said. "Our personality has been to kind of let teams right back into the game after we get up by 15 or 16 points. My biggest concern is to finish out ballgames."

"I think we just matched their energy and knocked down some of the good looks we had, especially in the first quarter," Bucks coach George Karl said. "We came out hot, held off a run they made and played well enough for the win."

Scott Williams collected 17 points and a season-high 15 rebounds as he continues to flourish in a starting role. Tim Thomas scored 12 points and Cassell added 10 for the Bucks, who shot 18-of-19 from the line.

"Scott has brought a lot of energy here," Cassell said. "For a big guy, he is making that open jumper. That has helped me out tremendously, especially on the pick-and-roll when I know he is on the wing."

Former Buck Chris Gatling scored 14 points and grabbed 11 boards for the Magic, who made 33-of-40 free throws but were beaten on the boards, 49-44.
