Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Damon Stoudamire scored 20 points and ignited a decisive third-quarter run as the Portland Trail Blazers snapped an eight-game losing streak in Seattle, defeating the SuperSonics, 107-81.

Greg Anthony scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Trail Blazers posted their first victory at KeyArena since April 17, 1995. Rasheed Wallace added 15 and nine rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who have won three straight and improved the NBA's best road record to 11-3.

"It was a great road win for us," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Their team had been playing extremely well at home. ... We have confidence that we can play with anyone, we just have to play our game."

Gary Payton scored 22 and Brent Barry added 13 for Seattle, which led 53-49 just over three minutes into the second half before Portland went on a 17-2 burst.

Horace Grant had a team season-high 19 rebounds for the Sonics. It marked the first time in eight games that the veteran forward has led the team in rebounding.

Portland remained one-half game behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division. Seattle is two games behind the Trail Blazers.

"I have been around a long time and I know that this is only one game, and it was sort of a test for us to see how far we've come as a basketball club," Grant said. I think this taught us a lesson that we're not that good of a basketball team right now."

The Trail Blazers made 45-of-85 shots (53 percent), including 10-of-19 3-point attempts, and blocked 10 shots. Seattle made just 39 percent (33-of-84) of its shots and committed 17 turnovers.

Payton's driving layup with 8:47 left put the Sonics on top, 53-49, but Stoudamire hit a layup and Smith buried a 3-pointer to give Portland the lead for good. Arvydas Sabonis hit a short hook shot in the lane for a 56-53 edge before Vin Baker sank a 14-footer for Seattle.

Sabonis had a three-point play with 6:06 to go in the quarter and Pippen drained a 16-footer from the right wing. Wallace added a free throw to push the lead to 62-55 with 5:21 remaining and added a layup one minute later. Stoudamire capped the burst with a 20-footer that gave Portland a 66-55 edge with 3:54 left.

"We were feeling like we had control of the game," Pippen said. "We tried to break it open and in the third quarter we really got our transition game going. We came up with some loose balls and hit them with a few quick baskets which gave us a double-figure lead and allowed us the opportunity to control the tempo of the game."

"They are a great team," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "If you're not sharp and you don't take care of the ball at big times, they can do this to teams and they did it to us tonight."

Payton had 12 points in the first quarter as Seattle led 28-26. He was limited to just two in the second quarter as the Trail Blazers rallied for a 49-44 halftime edge.

Seattle tied the contest as Grant had a layup and Brent Barry a 3-pointer to open the second half. Ruben Patterson followed with a layup before Payton capped the 9-0 spurt with his driving layup.
