Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- If the Utah Jazz have another run to the NBA Finals left, they probably do not want to face the Indiana Pacers.

Reggie Miller scored 19 points and Sam Perkins hit five 3-pointers in the second half as the Pacers snapped Utah's seven-game winning streak and completed their first sweep of the Jazz in nine years with an 89-74 victory.

Miller, the only Indiana starter that did not struggle offensively, made 8-of-15 shots from the floor as the Pacers won two games from the Jazz for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

Perkins hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to spark a game-ending 20-7 run and give the Pacers a 72-67 lead with 7:20 remaining. He played 24 minutes off the bench and hit 5-of-8 shots from behind the arc, finishing with 15 points.

"Sam played more minutes than he is used to, but he was hitting shots," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "He hit some big 3-pointers."

"We adjusted on the offensive end because as poorly as both teams were shooting, the fans could have scored more points," Perkins said.

Other than Miller, Indiana's starters shot a combined 27 percent (10-of-37). But the Pacers' bench outscored Utah's, 44-18. Travis Best scored 11 points and Austin Croshere added 10 and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Karl Malone had 16 points and 13 rebounds, but hit just 6-of-22 shots as the Jazz were limited to their lowest point total of the season. Utah, which lost for the first time since an embarrassing 100-75 home defeat to Indiana on December 3, shot just 36 percent (29-of-80).

"I've played this game long enough and knowing how the flow of the game for us is going to go as I play at the beginning," Malone said. "We did a decent job on the boards, outrebounding them (49-44) as a team, but they hit their shots a little better than we did. In the first game at home, they came out more physical and really took it to us."

Jeff Hornacek scored 15 points and Olden Polynice grabbed 12 rebounds for Utah, which fell to 3-1 on its seven-game road trip.

"We didn't come out with the same intensity that you need on the road like we had in the last few games," said Utah guard Howard Eisley, who had four fouls and two points in 17 minutes. "It basically came down to we weren't hitting our shots and they made theirs when it counted."

Miller scored 10 points in the first half when Indiana held a 34-30 edge.

"I've seen some bad ones, but that was bad," Bird said about the first half. "The one thing was that we were playing hard. We were playing hard and contesting shots."

John Stockton converted a three-point play to start the third period, but Utah followed with an 8-2 spurt to bring the lead to 42-35 on Jalen Rose's layup with 6:45 to go. The Jazz could not build the lead higher in the quarter and had a 62-58 advanatge to start the fourth.

Rose hit an eight-footer and Perkins followed with a 3-pointer to push the margin to 67-58. But Utah scored six straight points to close within 69-67 on Bryon Russell's 18-footer with 7:41 left. But Perkins' 3-pointer triggered a 10-0 run that he capped with another long jumper for a 79-67 cushion with 5:12 to go.
