Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Danny Ainge left new coach Scott Skiles with a respectable team and a world-class point guard, and tonight the latter pushed the Phoenix Suns to new heights.

Jason Kidd posted his first triple-double of the season, with a season-high 32 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, sparking the Suns to a big third quarter and an impressive 110-102 come-from-behind victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

"Tonight was a big win," Kidd said. "The team is going through a couple of changes right now and we just have to stick together to get the job done. We have to go out and play hard and that is what Scott is trying to get across to us."

Kidd buried 14-of-23 shots, including three in a row during a decisive 9-0 third-quarter run that put Phoenix ahead to stay.

"We felt confident being down two (points) at halftime," Kidd added. "We came out aggressive and the shots went down and we got the win. My job it to get everyone involved. I know I can get a shot at almost anytime, but there are times that I need to get the ball to the other people and let them score."

The triple-double was the 27th of Kidd's six-year career. The point guard extraordinaire led the NBA with seven triple-doubles last season but had not accomplished the feat since April 29 against Denver.

"I think No. 32 (Kidd) might make it past guarantee day," Skiles joked. "Jason had a great game. Basically everyone contributed. I'm very happy with the win. It was a gutsy performance."

Skiles improved to 2-0 since replacing Ainge after a surprising resignation by the former coach. The 35-year-old former point guard watched Kidd guide the Suns to their first win against the Blazers after they were swept out of the first round of the playoffs by Portland last season.

Damon Stoudamire scored 22 points for Portland, which slipped to 7-3 at home and fell 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers for the best record in the league. The Blazers had won four straight and 11 of the last 15 regular-season meetings with Phoenix.

"Well, after a game like this it will bring you down to earth real quick," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "After we got off to a good start, those two middle periods -- we just didn't get the job done."

Former Blazer Cliff Robinson scored 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting and Tom Gugliotta added 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Suns, who shot 49 percent (44-of-90) and yielded just three points off turnovers.

"It was a big game for us for the simple fact that they have played so well against us," Robinson said. "It gives us confidence that we can beat this team. I think Portland was surprised at how we maintained our confidence despite being down early."

Oliver Miller collected 12 points and Mark West and Toby Bailey added 12 and 10, respectively, off the bench for Phoenix, which scored 21 points off 15 turnovers and battled the bigger and stronger Blazers to a near standoff in the paint.

Things did not start off well for the Suns, who fell behind 27-19 after 12 minutes as Stoudamire and Scottie Pippen combined for 17 first-quarter points for Portland.

Pippen finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Rasheed Wallace added 16 points for the Blazers, who shot 49 percent (41-of-84) and held a 44-43 advantage on the boards.

Kidd scored nine points in the second quarter as the Suns closed to 53-51 at the half.

The game was knotted at 55-55 early in the third quarter when Kidd took control. The 6-4 playmaker out of California drained a 21-footer from the right sideline, was good from 19 feet from the left side and tried the right corner for good measure, sinking a 17-footer to make it 61-55 with 8:51 remaining in the period. Portland never seriously challenged thereafter.

"(Kidd) had a triple-double. He carried the team on his back," Blazers forward Brian Grant said.
