Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Kerry Kittles and Stephon Marbury combined to score 13 points in a 17-2 run to open the third quarter as the New Jersey Nets snapped a three-game road losing streak with a 98-74 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Nets led 46-43 at intermission before Marbury scored eight points and Kittles added five, including a 12-footer with 7:04 left in the third quarter, as New Jersey moved out to a commanding 63-45 lead.

"I think it was us executing," Marbury said. "They (Cavaliers) weren't in the flow and they never got in the flow. We knew they were tired because they played a back-to-back. But we came out and jumped out on them early in the third quarter."

The Nets outscored Cleveland 27-9 in the period and led by as many as 29 points in the fourth quarter en route to their fifth win in seven games. It was just New Jersey's second road win in 11 games this season.

Shawn Kemp scored 14 points and Bob Sura added 12 for Cleveland but combined for only six points in the second half. The Cavaliers suffered their second loss to New Jersey in four nights and have lost three straight overall.

"I apologize to the people who sat through that and paid money to see it," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "I apologize to our fans for the effort that was displayed today. It was a disgrace, 1 through 12, and I will find a way to deal with this. Until our guys begin to grow up and accept responsibilities, we're going to go through this. Each of us has got to look in the mirror and find out what I can do to help the situation instead of looking at it like it's somebody else."

The Cavaliers held a players-only meeting following the game and did not speak to the media.

Kittles scored 13 points in the first quarter as New Jersey jumped out to a 30-21 lead. But the Nets shot 30 percent (6-of-20) in the second quarter as Cleveland moved within three at the intermission.

New Jersey moved out to a 71-49 lead in the third quarter on a 10-footer by Sherman Douglas with 1:51 left. The Nets shot 61 percent (11-of-18) in the quarter to grab a 73-52 advantage. Cleveland made a dismal 18 percent (3-of-16) of its shots and the nine points were a season low for Cleveland in one quarter.

"When we get quality minutes from everybody, we're in good shape," New Jersey coach Don Casey said. "Tonight was very satisfying, particularly after how we struggled against them before here."

The Nets won for only the 15th time in 56 all-time visits to Cleveland.

Johnny Newman added 17 points off the bench for the Nets, who shot 45 percent (35-of-77) from the field, including 7-of-18 from 3-point range.

Cleveland made 36 percent (28-of-77) of its shots, including 29 percent (11-of-37) over the final two quarters, and committed 23 turnovers.
