Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz bounced back nicely from a horrible night in Indiana.

Malone scored 33 points as the Jazz finished with a flurry for their eighth win in nine games, 106-96 over the slumping Atlanta Hawks.

Malone scored 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting in Friday's 89-74 setback at Indiana, which snapped Utah's season-high seven-game winning streak. He scored 20 second-half points tonight, including six during a 20-10 run over the final seven minutes.

"It's always interesting to see how you bounce back after a tough loss when you didn't play well," Malone said. "It's also interesting when you're playing a team on their floor, when you have to grind it out. Down the stretch, I think we did every single thing to win this game."

The 6-9 power forward hit 14-of-26 shots, 5-of-6 free throws, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists. He committed just one turnover in 41 minutes for the Jazz, who gave the ball away just eight times.

"Guys made some big shots, guys made some big defensive stops and that's part of growing up as a team," Malone said.

Bryon Russell scored 10 of his 19 points in the final period. He had a perfectly executed steal and layup that gave the Jazz a 99-91 cushion with just over two minutes remaining.

John Stockton had 12 points and 11 assists for Utah, which improved to 7-4 on the road and won in Atlanta for just the 10th time in 33 all-time visits. Overall, the Jazz have won the last three meetings from the Hawks.

Isaiah Rider scored 24 points, Jimmy Jackson 22 and Dikembe Mutombo 21 for the Hawks, who have lost four of five to slip to 8-5 in their first season in Philips Arena.

"We just turned the ball over and did not execute down the stretch," Rider said. "The caliber of teams that have been coming at us as of late are giving us a run for our money. We're playing hard but we aren't executing and we aren't getting the win at the end of the night."

Alan Henderson scored 10 points and Mutombo grabbed 11 rebounds for Atlanta, which held a 41-36 advantage on the boards and outscored Utah, 31-16, at the line.

The game was tied for the 10th and final time at 86-86 with 6:58 to play before Malone and Russell took over.

Malone hit two jumpers and made a pair of free throws to give the Jazz a 97-91 lead with 3:09 to play, capping an 11-2 run. Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens called timeout, but Russell stepped in front of an errant pass on the ensuing possession and coasted in for an uncontested layup to open an eight-point bulge.

"We're not there as a team yet," Wilkens said. "I'll tell you that we're coming. We were getting there and then all of a sudden, we slipped. We've kind of regressed. The first half we played pretty good, we had seven turnovers, but we were back on defense. We were right in the game. Granted, they're a smart veteran team. But we've got to play smarter than we did."

Jeff Hornacek scored 11 points and Olden Polynice added 10 and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who shot 49 percent (43-of-87) and scored 16 points off turnovers.

"(We were thinking), `If we lose now, we have a two-game losing streak and we're on the road still two more games,'" Polynice said. "This one guaranteed we'll have a winning road trip, but at the same time, I just felt we played so well because of the circumstances. We lost last night, a tough loss. We missed some key shots, kind of how we won tonight. Three possessions changed the whole game."
