Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- John Amaechi led a balanced attack with 13 points as the Orlando Magic posted a 83-74 victory over the woeful Chicago Bulls.

The Magic trailed 47-46 with 8:27 left in the third quarter but used a 17-6 run to take a 63-53 lead into the fourth period. Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored eight of his nine points and Amaechi added six during the stretch.

"This was not a pretty game, but it was a good game for us. It was an emotional win," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I was worried about tonight. We're a young team and I expected a letdown after last night. I'm happy to get out of here with a win."

The Bulls (2-19), who are off to the worst start in franchise history, closed to 78-73 on two free throws by Corey Benjamin with 40 seconds remaining. But the Magic made their foul shots down the stretch.

"I thought it was a great effort by our guys. That was a good team we played tonight," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "It's very frustrating right now because our guys understand what we need to do, but we have no push on offense. I just wish we had more offensive weapons."

Chris Gatling added 10 points for Orlando, which went over the .500 mark (12-11) for the first time since being 9-8 on December 3.

Elton Brand, the first pick in the 1999 NBA draft, scored 19 points and added 10 rebounds for the Bulls, who shot only 34 percent (28-of-83) from the floor and committed 14 turnovers in losing their fourth straight game.

Corey Maggette had an inauspicious return to his hometown, scoring only three points in 20 minutes. The Magic rookie forward was born and raised in nearby Melrose Park.

"I was not nervous out there," Maggette said. "It was good to be out on the floor. My mom handled all the ticket requests, so she was more stressed out than me."

Bulls guard Fred Hoiberg re-injured his right knee in the second quarter and did not return. Reserve forward Kornel David scored 12 points and added eight rebounds.
