Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Vin Baker and Gary Payton scored six points each in an 18-6 run that opened the fourth quarter and powered the Seattle SuperSonics to a 93-84 victory over the shorthanded Chicago Bulls, who have lost five straight games.

The SuperSonics trailed 72-71 before Baker and Payton took over. The spurt covered nearly 10 minutes and gave Seattle a 91-77 advantage with 2:07 remaining.

"Gary Payton is a great player," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "He took over in the fourth quarter. That's what great players do."

"I think the Bulls played really hard the whole game," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "We looked at their record and said to ourselves that we didn't have to play defense tonight. In the fourth quarter, we got mad. We completely shut them down."

Baker scored 25 points and Payton added 22 and 13 assists for the Sonics, who have won four of their last five games.

Corey Benjamin scored a career-high 19 points and rookie Elton Brand added 14 for Chicago, which scored just 12 points in the final period. Playing with just nine players, the Bulls lost for the 15th time in 16 games.

Seattle took a 50-39 lead on Vernon Maxwell's layup with 5:01 left in the first half. But the Bulls battled back, using a 14-7 run keyed by six points by Corey Benjamin to reduce the deficit to 57-53 at intermission.

Chicago whittled away at the deficit in the third quarter. Rusty LaRue, who was signed earlier in the day, scored six of his 13 points in the period to help the Bulls take a 72-71 advantage into the final quarter. Seattle was ice-cold in the period, hitting on 5-of-19 shots while scoring only 14 points.

"I started the day in a CBA practice and ended up in an NBA game", LaRue said. "I got to play a lot. Unfortunately, we didn't win."

The Bulls have been hit with a rash of recent injuries. B.J. Armstrong was scratched prior to the game with a knee injury, joining Fred Hoiberg (quadricep strain) and Dedric Willoughby (groin) on the sidelines. Among those available to Floyd were three rookies and two second-year players.

"I thought our guys did a good job tonight," Floyd said. "Our shot selection was a problem. There was too much perimeter emphasis. We did not get enough post-up looks, especially in the second half. That resulted in low point production in the fourth quarter."
