Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Pat Garrity made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining to give the Orlando Magic a 104-102 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Garrity, who scored only eight points, hit the winning basket from the right sideline off a feed from Darrell Armstrong after NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone missed with 52 seconds left.

"I was looking to shoot. I was feeling pretty good," Garrity said. "I had a couple of inches on (Jeff Hornacek) so I was able to get it over him."

"That was a good one," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "Our defense took over in the second half. This is a difficult team to defend because of Karl Malone and veterans that play together. I liked our effort."

Utah had a chance to tie after Monty Williams hit 1-of-2 free throws with 18 seconds to go. But Howard Eisley shot an airball, Bryon Russell missed a layup with two seconds remaining and a follow shot by Malone was ruled to have come after the buzzer.

"I got scared when I saw the officials at the table," Rivers said. "I got to tell you, I didn't know if it was going to count or not, but looking at the replay, it was a good call."

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was not so sure about the ruling.

"Am I blind?" Sloan said. "I already made my speech out there; it did not do any good. But you don't deserve to win when you turn over the basketball 21 times. You have to give (Orlando) credit. It's obvious they outhustled us. You can't go out and play casually like we did."

Malone led the Jazz with 29 points, but cooled off dramatically in the fourth quarter, scoring only four points on 2-of-9 shooting. Utah shot 50 percent (37-of-74) from the floor overall but just 37 percent (14-of-38) in the second half.

Armstrong scored 22 points and Williams added 14 for Orlando, which has won three straight games.

The Jazz took a 102-100 lead on Hornacek's 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining. After both teams had empty possessions, Garrity hit the shot that put Orlando ahead to stay.

Orlando took a 97-92 lead on a three-point play by Armstrong with 5:14 remaining. A driving layup by Malone and a 3-pointer from the left sideline by John Stockton pulled Utah even with 4:26 left.

The Magic regained the lead at 100-97 on a three-point play by Garrity but the Jazz drew within a point at 100-99 on a driving layup by Malone at the 2:36 mark.

Utah was red-hot in the first half, shooting 64 percent (23-of-36) to take a 55-50 halftime lead. The Magic shot only 40 percent (17-of-42) but were able to stay close by making 16-of-19 free throws and forcing 14 turnovers.

"They were getting after it all night and we were careless with the ball," Hornacek said.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored all of his 14 points in the first half for Orlando, which shot 47 percent (40-of-85).
