Game StoryCHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- David Wesley scored 23 points and hit a key shot in the final minute as the Charlotte Hornets held off a furious fourth-quarter charge to defeat the Atlanta Hawks 108-104.
With Charlotte clinging to a 99-96 lead, Wesley hit a foul line jumper with 60 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 101-96.
After Dikembe Mutombo hit two free throws to bring the Hawks within 102-100, Wesley answered by draining two of his own to give the Hornets a 104-100 advantage with 25 seconds left. Atlanta would get no closer.
"I particularly liked David's play tonight," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "He was scoring and he had 12 assists. He stole the ball. It's probably the best all-around game I've seen him play."
The Hornets took their largest lead, 68-50, on a 21-foot jumper by Wesley with 8:18 left in the third quarter. But Atlanta used a 26-14 run to close within 82-76 with 39 seconds left in the period. Isaiah Rider and Alan Henderson led the comeback, scoring nine points apiece during the stretch.
"We can't keep letting ourselves get into holes like that," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "It's too hard to come back from that big a deficit. We got killed on the boards tonight."
Charlotte built the lead to 87-76 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. But Atlanta again battled back, drawing to 92-87 on a 3-pointer and short jumper by Jimmy Jackson.
Derrick Coleman hit two free throws to give the Hornets a 97-87 advantage with 3:36 remaining but Jason Terry connected on a running jumper and a long 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 97-92 at the 5:45 mark. The rookie guard finished with 12 points, three assists and three steals.
"Jason is coming along as a point guard," Silas said. "I want him to keep working on taking care of the ball. He can do a lot of things for us, especially score. Each day I challenge his focus to work on the little things."
Coleman scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as Charlotte defeated Atlanta for the first time since April 2, 1997. The Hornets had dropped eight straight to the Hawks.
"We really wanted to concentrate on our help defense tonight," Coleman said. "We were effective in not giving them easy shots and open looks. It was important for us to be aggressive at both ends of the court."
"Tonight we weren't so much concerned about (Atlanta) having our number in recent games," said Bobby Phils, who contributed 14 points and four assists. "We had to nip that in the bud and stay focused for 48 minutes."
Atlanta jumped out to an 11-6 lead, but the Hornets scored the next 10 points, highlighted by two 3-point baskets by Wesley, to take a 16-11 advantage. After an Atlanta score, the Hornets used another 10-0 run to extend their lead to 26-13 with 2:31 left in the first quarter. They took a 58-43 lead into halftime.
Rider finished with 25 points to lead the Hawks, who shot 47 percent (36-of-76) from the floor but were outrebounded 42-31.
Jackson scored 20 points and Henderson added 19 before fouling out in the final seconds.
