Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jalen Rose scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, but the Indiana Pacers needed just over seven minutes of the first quarter to put away the league-worst Chicago Bulls, 103-91.

Rose was 6-of-12 from the field, 7-of-8 at the line and had three assists to go with six rebounds. He scored eight points in the first quarter when Indiana opened a 34-16 cushion.

The versatile guard was not suspended by the league for his part in a Christmas night skirmish with forward Kurt Thomas of the New York Knicks. Instead, the 6-8 Rose helped the Pacers thump the lifeless Bulls, while Thomas received a two-game suspension and a $10,000 fine.

"At the beginning of the season, other teams jumped out early and we seemed to be taking a lot of knocks," said Rose, referring to his team's shaky 7-7 start. "But we have a great team and guys that know what has to be done. We'll be an even better team coming into the playoffs."

Dale Davis scored 21 points and Rik Smits added 15, including a 14-foot jumper with 4:58 remaining in the opening quarter that gave the Pacers a 21-11 lead.

The Bulls would not close within single digits thereafter, suffering their eighth straight loss to push their franchise-worst start to 2-23.

"It's a little scary to get a lead early," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "Teams have a tendency to have a letdown."

Mark Jackson handed out 13 assists for Indiana, which has won 11 of its last 13 games to move a season-high nine games over .500.

Rookie Ron Artest had a season-high 22 points and fellow first-year forward Elton Brand collected 22 and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, who have lost six in a row to the Pacers.

"I was really pleased with our rookies, Elton Brand and Ron Artest," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "I thought tonight was the best they've played all month."

Reggie Miller scored 13 points and Travis Best added 12 off the bench for the Pacers, who hit half of their 80 shots from the floor and forced 15 turnovers while committing only seven.

"Everyone was fired up before this game," Miller said. "We didn't want to come in here and lose a game that could mean a lot later for the playoffs and homecourt advantage."

"We've got a lot of guys that handle the ball well," Rose added. "That's why we have so few turnovers."

B.J. Armstrong scored a season-high 21 points and drained three of Chicago's seven 3-pointers. The Bulls finished 43 percent (35-of-81) from the field and held a 49-36 advantage on the boards.

"It was good to see that our guys played with effort and energy," Armstrong said. "There is no substitute for hustle. We are doing what we need to do to get over the hump."

Smits hit a six-footer and Miller buried a 3-pointer as Indiana opened the game with a 5-0 burst and never looked back. Chicago cut it to 7-4 on a short hook shot by Brand with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter, but Indiana opened things up for good on back-to-back baskets by Davis.

Rose made a driving layup and fed Jackson for another to make it 15-8 with 6:16 remaining. Davis' dunk and Smits' consecutive jumpers stretched the lead to 11 with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter.

Chicago actually outscored the Pacers by six points over the final three quarters, but could never get close after being blown away in the opening period.
