Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- John Stockton uncharacteristically failed to make his free throws down the stretch tonight, but had a pretty good reason for doing so.

Stockton missed 3-of-4 shots from the line in the final 30 seconds after suffering a broken nose, but Jason Kidd ended another spectacular all-around effort by missing a 22-footer with five seconds left as the Jazz held on for a 92-91 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Kidd posted his 30th career triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and a season-high 15 assists, taking sole possession of the lead in that category among active players over Detroit's Grant Hill (29). He kept his team's hopes alive by knocking down a 23-footer from the right sideline with 1:22 to play that pulled the Suns within 91-89. Kidd also came down on Stockton after making the shot, breaking Stockton's nose and severely watering his eyes for the remainder of the contest.

Stockton remained in the contest and missed a short jumper on the ensuing possession but grabbed his own rebound and was fouled with 30 seconds remaining. The perennial All-Star point guard and surefire Hall of Famer entered the contest at 90 percent from the line, but missed 1-of-2 to keep Phoenix within a 3-pointer of tying the game.

Kidd sped downcourt and made a layup with 24 seconds left before the Suns again tracked down Stockton and gave the foul with 12 seconds left. This time the veteran looked more like a shaky rookie hoping to find the rim before misfiring badly on both attempts to give Phoenix the ball with a chance to win.

After a timeout, Kidd dribbled left and fired up a jumper that hit the front of the rim before falling harmlessly into the arms of Utah forward Karl Malone, who dribbled out the clock.

"I wanted to take it full court and get Jason some momentum," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "He got a good look at it."

Stockton finished with 11 points and was scheduled to have surgery later tonight. He is listed as a gametime decision for Wednesday's game vs. Vancouver.

Malone had 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting for Utah, which improved to 10-3 at home after losing three of four on the road.

"To win a game like that, it was quite a win for us," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "After losing two games in a row in similar situations, you come back after a seven-game road trip and everyone expects a lot of energy and that's tough to do."

"I don't think people realize how big this game was for us," Malone added. "Because we had a two-game losing streak and had lost some tough ones and we came back against what I think is a really good Phoenix Suns team and were able to get a win here at home tonight."

Rex Chapman had a season-high 29 points for the Suns, who have lost four in a row at the Delta Center and slipped to 5-3 under new coach Scott Skiles.

Kidd now trails only Larry Bird (59), Magic Johnson (138) and Oscar Robertson (178) on the all-time list for triple-doubles.

"Jason Kidd's a great player," Sloan said. "He's a fun player to watch play because he enjoys playing basketball. In this day and age, to see guys having fun playing -- it's really something."

Rodney Rogers scored 14 points, Cliff Robinson 11 and Oliver Miller added 10 for Phoenix, which continued to play without starters Anfernee Hardaway (plantar fasciatis) and Tom Gugliotta, who is still undergoing testing after suffering a seizure on December 17.

Kidd, who made 7-of-13 shots, also committed nine of the Suns 24 turnovers. Utah collected 12 steals in the opening quarter to race to a 27-17 lead, but Phoenix answered with a 31-19 second quarter to take a 48-47 lead at the break.

"We didn't take care of the ball tonight," Kidd said. "It was an uphill battle. We had a great look to win a road game and ball just didn't go in."

"It feels like we're getting beat late, but we're beating ourselves early," Chapman said. "Digging holes and having to climb back. It was kind of like a hot potato in the first quarter. We had 10 or 11 turnovers in the first quarter."

Bryon Russell had 14 points, Stockton finished with 11 and Howard Eisley added 10 off the bench for Utah, which shot 43 percent (33-of-77) and yielded just seven points off turnovers.

Malone only scored two points in the fourth quarter, draining a running jumper with 2:06 to play that gave the Jazz a 91-85 lead.

Chapman followed with two free throws and Kidd made his jumper before the Jazz held the Suns off down the stretch.
