Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- In the race to surpass last season's victory total, the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Clippers.

Antonio McDyess scored 22 points to lead a balanced attack as the Nuggets cruised to a 128-105 victory over the Clippers and eclipsed their win total from the 1998-99 season.

The Nuggets went 14-36 in the lockout-shortened season but have come together this season as one of the most surprising teams in the NBA. They improved to 15-12 with their fifth straight home win and are three games over .500 for the first time since the 1994-95 season.

"We're ahead of schedule," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "We just have to maintain home court and play better on the road."

The Clippers (9-19) were seeking a similar but more modest goal. They went 9-41 last season and came in riding a three-game winning streak, the franchise's longest in nearly two years.

However, Los Angeles fell behind early and never recovered as Denver posted a season high in points. Raef LaFrentz and Ron Mercer scored 20 points each, Keon Clark added a career-high 19 and George McCloud 15 as the Nuggets shot a season-high 53.5 percent (46-of-86) from the field.

Denver also established season highs in first-half points (64), fast-break points (31), bench points (47) and assists (32).

"The bench has played well all year and it has become a big weapon for us," McCloud said. "A lot of guys have gotten opportunities because of injuries and when they get out there, they're increasing leads as well."

"The whole game they tortured us in transition," Clippers coach Chris Ford said. "We had five guys not get back on defense, take your choice. We were totally flat. We just can't give up uncontested points."

The Nuggets took control with a 12-0 burst late in the opening quarter. Mercer triggered it with a pair of hoops and McCloud capped it at 31-18 with a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left.

A dunk by McDyess completed a 9-2 burst that widened the bulge to 61-37 with 1:54 left in the second quarter.

"They didn't come out with a lot of energy and we wanted to push the ball and get easy shots and create mismatches," Nuggets guard Nick Van Exel said.

The Clippers trailed 64-46 at halftime but made a charge behind Maurice Taylor, who scored 13 of his career-high 30 points in the third quarter.

"The third quarter we just tried to cut down on their fast-break opportunities and that got us back into it," Taylor said.

The Nuggets saw their advantage cut to 93-86 entering the final period but responded with seven straight points. McDyess made a free throw, McCloud hit a 3-pointer and foul shot and LaFrentz sank a jumper, making it 100-86 with 9:59 to go. Denver pulled away down the stretch.

Van Exel had 13 points and 13 assists for the Nuggets, who committed just eight turnovers while forcing 15. LaFrentz had 11 rebounds and Clark added nine.

Tyrone Nesby scored 16 points for the Clippers, who shot 47 percent (43-of-91) and were outscored 28-13 at the foul line. Los Angeles had seven players in double figures but has dropped four straight meetings with Denver.
