Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers turned to their big man to snap a seven-game losing streak and he responded.

After struggling to a 12-point night on Sunday, Shawn Kemp bounced back by scoring 35 points and grabbing nine rebounds as the Cavaliers held on for a 96-94 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Cedric Henderson's basket gave Cleveland a 96-90 lead with 1:10 left. Mitch Richmond made 1-of-2 free throws with one minute left to move Washington within five and after a miss by Henderson, Tracy Murray drained a 3-pointer with 28 seconds to play to cut Cleveland's lead to 96-94 as Kemp left with an undisclosed injury.

Brevin Knight committed a turnover on Cleveland's next possession and Rod Strickland drove the lane but missed a layup. Lamond Murray grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Michael Smith, but missed both free throws to give Washington a chance to tie or win the game.

After Washington called timeout, Richmond missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2.8 seconds to go.

"We wanted to get the ball in Mitch's hands and we told him to take whatever was there," Washington coach Gar Heard said. "He felt as though he had the guy rocking back, and when he shot the ball, I would give him that shot every time. Most of the time he is going to make it for you."

Strickland scored 20 points and Jahidi White added 16 and 10 rebounds for Washington, which suffered its second loss in six games.

The Cavaliers were outrebounded, 48-41, but shot 46 percent (39-of-84) from the field as Kemp rebounded from his 2-of-14 performance Sunday by making 12-of-22 shots.

"It feels good to get on track," Kemp said. "We have to build off of this. If we can build off this and go into the new year with a good attitude and a good focus, we are going to be in good shape for the remainder of the season."

Tracy Murray's 3-pointer with 7:49 left in the fourth quarter allowed Washington to build an 84-80 advantage. But Kemp scored the first four points in a 10-0 run and Andrew DeClercq's alley-oop slam with 5:31 remaining capped the run as the Cavaliers grabbed a 90-84 lead.

Lamond Murray's 14-footer gave Cleveland a 54-46 lead with 10:50 to play in the third quarter. The Wizards went on a 7-0 run to take a 58-57 lead on a basket by Richmond with 7:13 to go. Rookie Andre Miller's running jumper with four seconds left allowed the Cavaliers to take a 76-75 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Kemp scored 15 points in the first quarter as the teams were tied at 31.

"Shawn was a guy that carried us most of the night and we were going to let him touch the ball each and every time down the stretch," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "He played with high energy like he told you guys like he was going to do. I told Shawn he needed to play with that energy every night."

Wesley Person came off the bench to score all seven of his points in the second quarter as Cleveland took a 52-46 lead at the intermission.
