Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Without their leading scorer and biggest headache, Isaiah Rider, the Atlanta Hawks gave an inspired team performance but were undone at the buzzer by Terry Mills.

Mills' 3-pointer from the right corner at the end of overtime lifted the Detroit Pistons to a thrilling 106-105 victory over the Hawks.

"It was a great win for us," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "The one thing we know about Atlanta, we knew that through adversary they would come together and play hard, which they did. They made a lot of plays, we just made one shot."

Rider lashed out at teammates in a profanity-laced locker room outburst after Wednesday's loss to Indiana. He then missed the team plane to Detroit and was suspended indefinitely by the club before attending a players' only meeting before tonight's game.

"When we came out of the locker room, we wanted to focus on the game. That's where our focus was," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said.

Jimmy Jackson started for Rider and scored 26 points to lead six players in double figures for the Hawks, who appeared to have taken control with an 8-0 run in overtime. Alan Henderson made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds to play that gave Atlanta a 105-103 lead.

The Pistons called timeout with five ticks remaining and Grant Hill took the ensuing inbounds pass and sent a pass to Mills, who was unguarded in the corner. The 6-10 250-pound forward calmly swished his 30th 3-pointer of the season as the buzzer sounded.

"That was definitely the play designed," Mills said. "It worked to perfection. We haven't had that type of luck this year. We've found ways to lose games, but never a way to win a game right at the end. But we did today."

Detroit's Jerry Stackhouse scored 14 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining that made it 97-97 and forced overtime.

"It was really a grind-out win tonight," Stackhouse said. "They just wouldn't go away tonight, but we did what we had to do to get the win. This was very competitive from start to finish tonight."

Hill scored 25 points and Mills added 17 for Detroit (15-14), which used Atlanta to climb over .500 for the second time this season. The Pistons had not been over the break-even mark since a 93-91 win over the Hawks on November 26 that lifted them to 7-6.

"We talked about the fact that their team has pride," Hill said. "The fact is, they came out and showed that they can win without (Rider). They did a good job. We didn't play great, we played good at times. The main thing is we were able to win."

LaPhonso Ellis came off the bench and scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime for the Hawks, who suffered their third straight loss and seventh in eight games. Atlanta fell to 2-12 on the road.

"I don't want them to drop their heads," Wilkens said. "It was a difficult loss. I think twice we should have won it and they made two big shots. On the last one, it was a little too much help (on Hill). We were going to rotate. They went really quick and we didn't have a chance to get over there."

Atlanta knocked Detroit out of the first round of last season's playoffs but has lost four of its last five regular-season encounters with the Pistons.

Dikembe Mutombo had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Henderson added 13 and 11 for the Hawks, who shot 42 percent (42-of-99) and held a 28-13 advantage in bench scoring. Atlanta also dominated the boards by a whopping 60-39 margin.

"Tonight the coach said, `We came out and played as a team.' We really moved the ball very well and guys used their heart and soul and that's what kept us in the game," Mutombo said. "We played decent basketball tonight. It's a very tough loss to take, but we have to live with it."

"We showed a lot of heart and a lot of progress today, playing together the way we did," Jackson added. "We looked out for each other. You have a guy like Grant Hill and he draws your attention. Terry Mills was open in the corner and hit a clutch shot."

Bimbo Coles scored 14 points and Chris Crawford added 11 for Atlanta, which trailed 103-97 with 3:33 remaining in ovetime after Hill's dunk.

But Jackson hit a jumper, Mutombo made a follow shot and Ellis forged a 103-103 tie by hitting a 16-footer with 53 seconds left.

Stackhouse was fouled on Detroit's ensuing possession, but the 82 percent shooter uncharacteristically misfired on both attempts.

Jackson missed a running jumper but Henderson fought off a pair of defenders to grab the rebound and was fouled by Jerome Williams with 10 seconds left. Henderson, who entered tonight at 61 percent from the stripe, hit both as Atlanta pulled ahead by two.

Lindsey Hunter dribbled passed midcourt and called timeout and the Pistons set up for Mills' winning shot.

Christian Laettner scored 16 points for the Pistons, who shot 46 percent (40-of-87) and scored 19 points off turnovers while committing just 10.
