Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- For the second straight game, Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers gave their opponent the third degree in the third quarter.

Miller scored 10 of his 30 points in another huge third period as the Pacers roared to their fifth straight victory, 109-99 over the Charlotte Hornets.

Indiana took the lead for good with a surge to close the first half and kept it going after intermission. The Pacers shot a blistering 68 percent (13-of-19) in the third period, including 5-of-5 from 3-point range.

Miller had a pair of 3-pointers and 10 points Dale Davis and Mark Jackson added eight apiece in the period as Indiana scored 37 points and moved out to an 87-71 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"In the second half they came out ready and they weren't missing much," Hornets coach Paul Silas said.

In a 116-89 victory at Atlanta on Wednesday, Miller scored 19 points in a 40-point third quarter.

"We had to continue our success from yesterday," said Miller, who shot 10-of-16 from the field. "I am on a roll and the team is on a roll."

Jackson scored a season-high 18 points and added 11 assists and Davis contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pacers, who shot 47 percent (40-of-85) in their ninth straight home win.

"Once again we came out ready to play," Jackson said. "We executed well on both ends of the court. The third quarter was a big quarter for us."

"This was a big game for us," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "Charlotte was one game behind and they are very talented. We had to take care of business."

David Wesley scored 17 points and Elden Campbell added 15 for the Hornets (18-11), who fell two games behind first-place Indiana in the Central Division. Charlotte is 0-5 on the road against division foes.

Miller had two 3-pointers in a 10-2 burst that opened the third quarter and gave Indiana a 60-49 lead with 8:59 remaining. He twice followed 3-pointers by Jackson with jumpers and a 3-pointer by Austin Croshere completed a 13-2 run to extend the advantage to 75-58 with 4:58 left in the period.

"They came out strong after halftime," Silas said. "They played super. We didn't play good. The third quarter was pretty much the ballgame."

"They really got it going in the third quarter and we helped them get it going," Wesley said.

The Hornets put up no fight thereafter and the Pacers opened their largest lead at 107-83 on a layup by Travis Best with 4:21 to play.

Best scored 15 points and Jalen Rose added 10 for the Pacers, who avenged a 98-89 loss at Charlotte on November 4. Indiana committed 32 turnovers in that game but just 12 tonight.

"Everybody knows that on an open floor, Jalen and Travis can run one of the best fast breaks in the NBA," Miller said.

After Miller opened the second quarter with a jumper to give Indiana a 33-28 lead, the Hornets rattled off 15 straight points and opened a 43-33 advantage on a jumper by Campbell with 7:28 left.

The Pacers responded with a 17-4 spurt that closed the half and provided a 50-47 halftime lead. Chris Mullin and Miller made 3-pointers in the surge.
