Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- A monster performance by Tim Duncan is nothing new. Neither is a San Antonio Spurs' victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Duncan scored 32 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Spurs notched their ninth straight win against the Grizzlies and third in five games overall with a 98-88 triumph.

Terry Porter's layup with 8:01 left capped an 8-2 run and gave San Antonio an 82-70 lead to help improve its all-time record against Vancouver to 14-3. The Spurs have not lost to the Grizzlies since February 12, 1997.

Duncan, who scored a career-high 42 points against the Grizzlies on December 9, shot 12-of-24 from the floor and was 8-of-10 from the line. He made his first seven shots and scored 12 points in the opening quarter.

"It was a game we really needed," Duncan said. "I needed to be aggressive and get my feel back. It's a little bit easy when you get a couple of layups to start."

"Tim Duncan is a competitor. He does everything well, not just score," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I thought the Grizzlies were real solid. They're giving everybody a tough time. We've got to continue to execute."

David Robinson added 19 points and 13 rebounds and Porter scored 14 points for the Spurs.

"I was real proud of our effort tonight. I'm trying to help take the scoring pressure off Tim," Robinson said. "(The Grizzlies) are not a team you are going to run over."

Robinson was 11-of-12 from the line for San Antonio, which shot 29-of-33 overall while Vancouver was just 13-of-16.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 24 points and Mike Bibby added 21 and 11 assists for the Grizzlies, who suffered their fourth straight loss and dropped to 2-5 under interim coach Lionel Hollins.

"If we could rebound better, we could run better which would give us easier baskets," Hollins said. "It's a combination of that and the fact that we are playing teams who are excellent defensively."

Robinson scored six points during an 11-1 spurt that gave San Antonio a 47-33 lead with 43 seconds left in the first half. The Spurs outscored the Grizzlies, 28-13, in the second quarter to gain a 47-35 halftime advantage.

"We're playing well, but the second quarter really hurt us," Bibby said. "We need to play all four quarters."

Jaren Jackson netted five points in a 9-1 run to put the Spurs ahead 67-51 with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter. Duncan scored 10 points in the period.

Bibby and Michael Dickerson had six points apiece during a 17-7 spurt spanning the third and fourth periods to pull the Grizzlies within 74-68.
