Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat opened American Airlines Arena with a win as Voshon Lenard scored 24 points off the bench and Jamal Mashburn added 22 and 10 rebounds in a 111-103 overtime victory and home-and-home sweep of the Orlando Magic.

Alonzo Mourning scored 21 points, despite just 4-of-18 shooting, as Miami won for the fifth time in six games. Mourning made 13-of-17 foul shots as the Heat shot 84 percent (27-of-32) from the free throw line. Mashburn, who missed the last five games with an ankle injury, made just 9-of-22 shots from the field.

"Our defensive play gave us the opportunity to get the ball in the basket," Mourning said. "We didn't stop until the game was over. It came to us making big plays down the stretch. Orlando outplayed us this evening but we took it in the end."

"Homecourt advantage is what you make of it," Mashburn said. "It's a presence that you have to build."

Miami outscored Orlando 32-19 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Mourning had six points in a 13-3 run that ended the fourth. His eight-foot jumper from left corner tied it at 96-96 with eight seconds to play. Orlando had a chance to win in regulation, but Pat Garrity missed a 20-footer as time expired.

"It doesn't matter where we're playing, we should always play hard," Lenard said. "We can't continue to play like that, especially against teams that have been to the finals."

Tariq Abdul-Wahad made two free throws to give the Magic a 98-96 lead 34 seconds into overtime, but Mourning answered with a pair of foul shots to ignite a 13-0 tear. The Heat did not take the lead in overtime until Mourning made a free throw for a 99-98 edge with 2:35 remaining.

P.J. Brown, who had 12 points and 15 rebounds, sank a 19-footer to give Miami a 101-98 advantage with two minutes left. Dan Majerle hit a 3-pointer with 1:22 to play and Mashburn's jumper from the right sideline pushed the margin to 106-98. Mashburn capped the run with two free throws for a 109-98 lead with 37 seconds remaining.

Abdul-Wahad scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Orlando, which missed its first nine shots in overtime. Darrell Armstrong scored 16 points and Michael Doleac added 14 and 10 rebounds for the Magic, who held a 63-45 advantage on the boards.

"We outplayed them until the end, we just didn't execute," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers. "We turned the ball over 14 times in the second half with most of them down the stretch. We did everything we needed to do to win this game except for handling the ball. We outplayed them for 46 minutes, but it's a 48-minute game. We've got to do a better job at closing teams out."

Orlando led by as much as 77-64 when Doleac made a jumper from the right sideline just before the buzzer at the end of the third period. The Magic held a 93-83 lead when Abdul-Wahad dunked with 2:37 left in the fourth, but Mourning responded with two free throws eight seconds later to begin the 13-3 run.

"It just wasn't meant for us to win this game," Abdul-Wahad said. "Miami is a good team and it's always a challenge to play one of the best teams in the league."

Armstrong scored nine points in the first period to help Orlando to a 24-18 lead. Lenard kept the Heat in the game with 17 points in the second and the Magic took a 56-49 advantage into the locker room.
