Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- George McCloud's specialty turned into a victory for the Denver Nuggets.

McCloud drained a 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds remaining as the Nuggets continued their strong play at home with a 98-96 victory over the woeful Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks took their last lead at 96-95 with 26 seconds to play when Michael Finley nailed a jumper. Denver called timeout, setting the stage for the veteran McCloud, a former Maverick.

Known as long-range shooter, McCloud took a kick-out pass from Antonio McDyess and swished a 3-pointer from the right corner to give the Nuggets the lead. McCloud, who entered the game as a 40 percent shooter (32-of-80) from beyond the arc, hit 5-of-9 3-pointers and scored 19 points.

"I got a good pass in the corner and I made the shot," McCloud said. "It was just routine. I used to play for Dallas so it was a big game for me but more importantly the team needed this game."

"They had (Keon) Clark covered so I hit McCloud in the corner," McDyess said. "He was definitely going to beat himself up for missing the first one."

Dallas had one last chance to send the game into overtime but Finley missed a jumper off the rim from left of the key as time expired.

McDyess collected a season-high 27 points and 13 rebounds and Nick Van Exel had 17 and 13 assists for the Nuggets, who improved to 13-4 at home. Denver is just 3-10 away from the Pepsi Center.

"We did play lackadaisical because we were pretty tired after a back-to-back but we got our wind in the second half," McDyess said.

Finley tallied 28 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and Gary Trent added 20 points for Dallas, which has lost four straight games and nine of its last 11.

The Nuggets entered the fourth quarter with a 76-74 lead and it was tight thereafter with no team leading by more than three points.

Denver gained an 83-80 lead with 5:50 left after McCloud nailed a 3-pointer but the Mavericks reeled off a 12-6 run, capped by Cedric Ceballos' layup for a three-point lead with 92 seconds remaining.

But McDyess tallied three straight points to tie it before Shawn Bradley hit an 18-footer to put Dallas back in front with under a minute left. McCloud answered with a 3-pointer to give the Nuggets a 95-94 lead with 45 seconds to go. Finley followed with his jumper 19 seconds later, giving Dallas its last lead.

McDyess made 10-of-16 shots from the field but struggled from the free throw line, making just 7-of-14. As a team, Denver made just 11-of-19 foul shots.

Finley tallied 17 points and Trent 14 in the opening half as the Mavericks opened a 54-45 advantage.

Trent left the contest with 7:37 remaining after suffering a groin injury. Fellow forward Dirk Nowitzki also left with 5:46 to play after getting sick to his stomach.

However, the scrappy Nuggets changed that very quickly in the second half, using a 14-2 burst to take the lead. McCloud and Mercer combined for nine points in the surge.

After getting beat on the boards 26-14 in the first half, the Nuggets completely turned that around in the second half with a commanding 34-13 advantage, including 14 on the offensive end.

Finley who played the entire game, made 10-of-22 shots as the Mavericks shot 45 percent (38-of-84).

"We ran out of big players," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Gary Trent pulled a groin, Dirk Nowitzki got sick and it cost us the game. I don't know what to do about it.

"I can't believe we left George McCloud open for 3s but we did. We did such a good job on the boards in the first half and the second they beat us to every ball. It was a totally different game in each half."
