Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Unfortunately for the Phoenix Suns, they're stuck in the Western Conference.

Cliff Robinson scored six of his 30 points during a decisive third-quarter run as the Suns improved to a staggering 12-1 against Eastern Conference foes with an 86-80 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Robinson hit 12-of-19 shots, including 4-of-7 3-pointers. He also grabbed nine rebounds and handed out five assists for the Suns, who are a perfect 10-0 against teams from the East at America West Arena this season.

"Cliff was great. He played the way Cliff is supposed to play," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "He made shots, he ran the floor, he was shooting 3s, he was just terrific. He's having a great season so far and I see no reason why he shouldn't be considered for All-Star play."

The Suns' lone loss to a non-conference foe came at Milwaukee on November 12. Phoenix avenged that defeat here on December 20 with a 108-101 victory over the Bucks.

David Wesley scored 18 points and hit a 3-pointer with 9:06 remaining in the third quarter to give the Hornets a 50-48 lead. Rodney Rogers responded with a three-point play to put Phoenix in front for good and Robinson followed with a layup and two free throws to make it 55-50 with 7:44 left in the period.

Rex Chapman made two from the line before Robinson capped the 11-0 run with a running jumper to up the lead to 59-50 with 6:17 remaining in the third quarter.

"We were in this game, we should have found a way to get there," Wesley said.

Jason Kidd had 11 points and 10 assists for the Suns, who are just 7-10 in the Western Conference and six full games behind the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division.

Tom Gugliotta made his return to the starting lineup for Phoenix and had two points and 10 rebounds in 16 minutes. He had missed the previous seven games after suffering a seizure on the team bus in Portland on December 23.

"It felt good. It felt good to be out there," Gugliotta said. "I guess I had high hopes as to how well I could play, but I guess you've got to be realistic. My timing and the skills of the game are not there. But I just tried to go out and rebound and play defense. That worked out pretty well."

Elden Campbell scored 18 points for Charlotte, which slipped to 2-4 without injured leading scorer Eddie Jones. The Hornets slipped three games behind first-place Indiana in the Central Division.

Phoenix has won three straight at home against Charlotte and is 9-3 here against the Hornets all-time.

The Hornets crawled back into it with a 10-0 fourth-quarter run that pulled them within 79-75 with 4:07 to play. Oliver Miller converted a three-point play on the Suns' ensuing trip and the Hornets never seriously challenged thereafter.

Derrick Coleman had 14 points and a season-high 19 rebounds and Anthony Mason added 10 points for the Hornets, who shot just 32 percent (26-of-81) and but outscored the Suns, 22-9, at the line.

"The shots just didn't go in," Silas said. "We had the shots, but we just missed."

"Down the stretch we didn't make shots," Coleman added. "Phoenix did a great job of getting to the basket, drawing fouls down the stretch and just executing."

Todd Day scored 13 points off the bench for Phoenix, which shot 42 percent (34-of-80) and held a 56-47 advantage on the boards.

"That was in my opinion our best defensive game," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "To hold them to 35 points in the second half and 26 field goals in the game, I thought our defense overall was excellent."

Phoenix improved to 11-0 when holding opponents below 90 points.
