Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Gary Payton had 24 points, 10 assists and six rebounds as the Seattle SuperSonics continued getting well at the San Antonio Spurs' expense, knocking the world champions out of first place with a 99-96 victory.

Payton made 11-of-23 shots, including a clutch jumper in the lane with 19 seconds to play that gave the SuperSonics a 97-91 lead. Seattle has won back-to-back games since a season-high five-game skid and snapped a three-game losing streak at the Alamodome.

"We played well," Payton said. "We didn't look tired. Chuck (Person), Greg (Foster) and Horace (Grant) played with a lot of intensity and it spread to the rest of us. We always need to play with that much intensity. Tonight we knew they were going to come out hungry after losing (to Minnesota) last night."

Grant scored 16 points, Brent Barry 13 and Ruben Patterson and Foster added 11 apiece for Seattle, which improved to 10-7 on the road.

"We got great performances from our starters but we also got a big lift from Greg Foster and Chuck Person gave us a huge lift of stability," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "We made them earn their points. This is as good a win as you are going to see."

Tim Duncan had 24 points and 12 rebounds and fellow "Twin Tower" David Robinson added 20 and 11 for the Spurs, who slipped one-half game behind Utah for the top spot in the Midwest Division. The Jazz (20-10) posted a 118-96 home win over Charlotte.

"Everything seemed to go their way for a while," Duncan said. "We got back into the game and gave ourselves a chance. We just didn't put it away."

Avery Johnson and Terry Porter each scored 15 points for San Antonio, which has dropped five of its last eight games and two in a row at home.

"Right now, overall, we're not getting it done," Johnson said. "A lot of these teams will not go to the playoffs. We are built for the playoffs. I have not doubt we have a chance to win the championship, but we are not going to win it in the first week of January."

Vin Baker had a rough night for the Sonics, scoring 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting. Seattle shot 47 percent (42-of-88) and committed only eight turnovers.

"Sometimes the lid is on the basket and it was for me tonight," Baker said.

The Spurs shot 48 percent (38-of-79) and held a 44-41 advantage on the boards.

Patterson had a driving layup and a dunk before Grant's layup capped a 10-0 run, giving Seattle an 18-9 lead with 6:20 remaining in the opening period.

Robinson cut the deficit to 24-21 before the Sonics pulled away again on Foster's layup and Person's 3-pointer that made it 29-21 with 1:44 left in the quarter.

Barry's layup gave the Sonics a 50-36 lead 3:26 before halftime before the champs got serious. Porter made back-to-back 3-pointers and Duncan sank a hook shot in the lane as the Spurs fought back within 51-44 at halftime.

Jaren Jackson's driving layup pulled San Antonio within 53-50 with 9:48 remaining in the third quarter but Barry hit a 3-pointer and a layup to open an eight-point lead.

Mario Elie finally put the Spurs back on top, capping a 7-0 run with a 25-footer that made it 65-64 with 3:25 to play in the third. But Seattle answered quickly and opened a 71-67 lead on Emanual Davis' 3-pointer with less than two minutes left.

Seattle did not surrender the lead thereafter.

"It's hard to start a new year like this," Elie said. "When we need to make big plays defensively and get buckets, we don't seem to get that. Our margin for error is slim."
