Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored 30 points as the Utah Jazz recorded their best offensive output of the season and coasted to a 118-96 victory over the slumping Charlotte Hornets.

A two-time Most Valuable Player, Malone had 16 points before halftime as the Jazz opened a 60-47 advantage and were never threatened.

John Stockton added 16 points and Howard Eisley also scored 16 -- all in the fourth quarter -- for Utah, which has won four straight and 12 of its last 15 games since an 8-7 start.

Stockton and Eisley, the team's two point guards, were on fire from the floor, combining to make 14-of-17 shots. As a team, the Jazz shot a blistering 62 percent (50-of-81).

"We haven't been shooting the ball particularly well, but I think every guy here contributed and played really well in this game tonight," said Malone, who made 12-of-15 shots while grabbing eight rebounds and handing out seven assists.

Utah's best previous output came in a 111-100 victory at Milwaukee on November 20.

David Wesley scored 19 points and Derrick Coleman and Bobby Phills scored 14 points apiece for the Hornets, who have dropped three straight and six of seven following a season-best eight-game winning streak.

"You just try to move and forget this bad boy because we've beaten teams by 22, 24 this year, and you move on," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "There is not much to say. I thought the guys played hard, it just wasn't there."

The Hornets actually got off to a good start, taking an 18-12 advantage six minutes into the contest on Anthony Mason's jumper. But it was all downhill from there.

Bryon Russell nailed a 3-pointer and Malone scored six straight points to put the Jazz ahead for good. After Mason hit two free throws, Malone had two more baskets around one by Jeff Hornacek for a 27-20 lead with 2:19 left in the quarter.

Malone sank a pair of free throws to give the Jazz their biggest lead of the half, 58-40. The Hornets made a late run before intermission to close to 60-47.

Utah wasted no time putting the game out of reach as it opened the second half with a 9-2 burst, capped by Hornacek's running jumper for a 69-49 bulge. The Jazz led by double digits thereafter and by as many as 24 points in the final period.

"I think we caught a team tonight that played a tough game last night," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "It looked like their energy level had dropped off some. We were fortunate we were able to shoot the ball pretty well. I thought we excecuted our offense real well."

Charlotte shot 41 percent (32-of-78) and was outrebounded, 42-32.
