Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Travis Best scored nine of his 15 points in a pivotal burst to open the fourth quarter as the Indiana Pacers posted their season-high seventh straight victory, 102-87 over the Denver Nuggets.

The Pacers led 76-74 entering the final period before a free throw by Raef LaFrentz got the Nuggets within one. Best ignited the 19-4 spurt with a layup and two free throws and Reggie Miller followed with a layup with 9:34 left for an 82-75 advantage.

After a basket by LaFrentz, Miller added two free throws and Austin Croshere buried a 3-pointer with 6:59 to go. Antonio McDyess made a free throw 17 seconds later but Sam Perkins and Best sank consecutive 3-pointers. Best capped the run with an 18-footer with 5:24 remaining.

"In the fourth quarter we made shots, played better defense, moved to the ball and Travis Best controlled the tempo," said Pacers coach Larry Bird. "We had a lot of guys do well in the second half. We didn't have a full 48 minutes but we played well enough to win."

"It was a second half turnaround," Perkins added. "We executed really well and some guys stepped up in the fourth quarter. They didn't run as much as they have early this season."

Miller scored 20 points and Rik Smits added 17 for the Pacers, who have scored at least 100 points in each game during the streak and improved to 17-1 this season when reaching the century mark.

The Pacers made 12-of-26 3-point attempts and were 14-of-15 at the line. They blocked eight shots and committed only 11 turnovers.

McDyess had 21 points and nine rebounds for Denver, which has lost the last eight meetings with Indiana. Nick Van Exel had 12 points and 11 assists, his third consecutive double-double and eighth straight game with at least 10 assists.

"I'm not sure what happened," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "I think they made most of their shots and we missed most of our shots. We are not playing with the same intensity that we did early on in the season."

"Our intensity is not as strong as it was before Christmas," LaFrentz said. "We went through a stretch there in the fourth quarter where we could not get a defensive stop."

McDyess scored 13 of his 21 points in the opening quarter as Denver took a 25-23 lead. Perkins had seven and Miller five in the second quarter, helping the Pacers to a 48-45 halftime lead.

Smits took over in the third quarter, scoring 12 points, but LaFrentz had eight and the Nuggets made 12-of-22 shots in the period to draw within 76-74 heading into final 12 minutes.

But in the fourth quarter Denver made only 4-of-15 shots and missed all four 3-point attempts.
