Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Garry St. Jean is finding out what P.J. Carlesimo already knew: The Golden State Warriors are not very good.

The Warriors suffered their eighth straight loss and remained winless under St. Jean as Lamond Murray scored 20 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 90-75 victory.

Golden State has struggled all season and on December 27, St. Jean fired Carlesimo and took over the coaching duties to go along with his general manager's chores. The move has not helped as the Warriors have lost all five games under their new coach.

Murray, who fell two points shy of a season high, scored 16 points in the first half as the Cavaliers built a 46-40 lead. They extended the advantage to 70-57 after three quarters.

"A win is a win and we'll take it," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "It wasn't the prettiest of basketball but I think the turning point was our second unit. Tonight, they came in and won the game for us."

Rookie Andre Miller added 13 points for Cleveland, which won for only the second time in its last 12 games.

Antawn Jamison had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Mookie Blaylock added 16 points and eight assists for Golden State (6-26), which owns the NBA's second-worst record, better only than the Chicago Bulls.

"I don't think this was a very well played basketball game," St. Jean said. "It was a good win for the Cavaliers. They needed one."

After a dunk by Donyell Marshall pulled the Warriors within 58-54 with 4:18 left in the third quarter, Cleveland began to pull away.

Murray and Miller each sank a pair of free throws before Cedric Henderson made consecutive baskets for a 66-54 bulge with 58 seconds left in the quarter. The lead grew to 70-57 entering the final 12 minutes.

The Warriors never got within single digits the rest of the way. Golden State shot a lowly 31 percent (30-of-98) but battled the Cavs to a stalemate on the boards, 53-53.

One of the most interesting battles of the night was between the rookie point guards, Miller and Vonteego Cummings. Miller had seven assists while Cummings finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Bob Sura added 12 points for the Cavs, who shot 43 percent (38-of-89) while making just 2-of-15 attempts from 3-point range.

Sura was part of the Cavs' bench that outscored Golden State's reserves, 34-17.

"It felt good to finally to win a game," Sura said. "We've been really struggling. It was an ugly game to win against one of the lower teams in the league. We won the game tonight but it wasn't like we beat the Lakers."
